How do you mean? through a ext HDD? media player? data stick?

You'll probably need to convert them to avi first..

Why convert them? Assuming your PS3 and computer are on the same network, stream them using Java PS3 Media Player - works beautifully, no conversion required.

http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/downloads/...

Works with every other format I've thrown at it too, including music. Means you can also keep embedded subs too, as well as decent resolutions. Most of mine are 720p as I can't see a difference with 1080 and the PC struggles to transcode 1080 on the fly. PS3 Media Server even keeps multi-channel sound as well.

Can't stream the HD file with PS3 Media Server very well - the buffering is rubbish and you're playing catchup should you wish to rw or ffw.Better to just convert

the mkv and put on portable drive...

Fair play. I found my old-spec PC struggled to keep up. At first I thought it was network limitations, but a gigabit switch between the PC and PS3 didn't change much. It was only when I went over to an i7 860 that it really started to work well. I know what you mean about FF and RWD, but I rarely do that if I'm watching a film. Buffering with this PC is minimal and the most I'd ever do would be to pause it.

Whatever works for you though! How long does it take you to convert them to VOB?

About 2.5 minutes. It is very quick and there's no loss in quality. It will split the files into >2gb chunks if you have a larger mkv file.

That will depend on what codec was used in the MKV file and what codec you want it converted too. MKV and AVI are just containers and pretty much any codec can be used within them. Sounds like you were just splitting the file rather than converting it.

Sounds to me you know nothing about PS3s!

You would make yourself look less foolish if you knew what you were talking about. A PS3 can't play mkv files direct unless they are streamed,so to watch them

it's a case of demuxing the mkv file and then remuxing into an mp4 container.THEN you have to split the file if it is larger than 3.99 gb because the PS3 is

formatted to FAT32.

I haven't got a clue what you're on about! I haven't even mentioned PS3s. All I was commenting on was that an MKV is a container file for many different codecs, as is an AVI, and depending on what codecs you want it in it may take longer than 2.5minutes as you said to re-encode it. If the containers used the same codec then all you are doing is demuxing it from an MKV then remuxing it into and AVI. If you wanted to create say a divx (which can also be in an AVI container) then it may be a lot longer than 2.5mins. I dont care what you watch it on. But you are right a PS3 will not be able to play an MKV direct and yet it is formatted to FAT32 so file sizes are too big. Does sthat help?

R2R - If you are going to quote someone it helps if you've read the context of the quote.

I am saying that for some reason you thought I was merely splitting the files. However now you realise the subject of my quote was playing mkvs on a PS3,

you have understood my actions. If you had read the thread beforehand you would have known this.

YOU haven't mentioned PS3s,but it was one of the topics of the conversation you nicked my quote from!

I thought the subject of the post was how to play MKVs on a panasonic TV. Which you can't. He can however re-encode them to AVIs and play them if they are in a DIVX or XVID codec. I didn't miss your PS3 bit just didn't see how that helped the OP and confused the issue by saying it took so little time to convert when it probably wouldn't for them. I am sure you are right about the PS3 however.

Thanks for all your replies so far. I was trying to get the .mkv files playing from a usb stick directly in the usb ports on the side of the tv. It is a GT42 3d Panasonic. The manual says it can do this but it won't play the files (I am guessing the resolution of the file is too high as it is approx 13 gig in size. After using some of the information above I have used mkv2vob to convert the file (maybe just a container change?) it then outputs them into 4 gig parts which are fat 32 compliant. I then copy the files on to a 16 gig usb stick and play them via usb on the PS3, the file extension then becomes .mpg.

Hope this helps some people.

If you're saying the manual says mkv files are supported I'd be very surprised because they aren't!

The conversion advice is good though!

I have the Panasonic TX-P42GT30B 3D Plasma and mkv files play off a 16GB SanDisk Cruzer Blade USB Flash Drive. It's the way to go..
