.....there are a couple of options.

Assuming that the diagnosis is correct (faulty PSU - discovered here).

1. Order a repair kit like this

2. Order a replacement PSU like this

I'd like to go for option 1, but how easy will it be to replace the capacitors? Time wise, option 2 is a no-brainer but if anything happens to the PSU in transit, i'm stuffed.

Or does anyone know a repair outfit local to Reading?

Option 3 - phone Sky, ask to leave, tell them you're leaving because the hardware is faulty and you'll just get a Freesat box instead. Worked for me... new compact HD box installed next day.

Similar to Miniman, except I also asked them to quote for a repair, which I think was £99 or something? Told them I couldnt justify it and was going to leave. Sent around an engineer with a new HD box! I still cancelled my Sky a few days later anyway, and been happy with my Freesat HD box ever since! smile

Really? But dont you have to pay EVEN more for an HD box subscription? And as I dont yet have a HD set do they also come with SCART as well as HDMI

Capacitors are a doddle to replace BTW. I was given a 15" LCD TV that would not power up. Cost of repair? about 70p.

I already had an HD subscription. They do have SCART and HDMI.

Bought the 6 quid kit & replaced two of the capacitors that were visibly faulty.

No. Going from Sky+ to Sky+ HD was free for me too (they even installed it for free).

So if I just get an old Sky+ HD box but dont have the HD subscription can I still get all the free HD channels (BBC1 etc).?
