Ignore the M4 and M5 and take instead the fruity A303 that heads in the same southerly direction yet brings you a bending, undulating ride studded with history.
Tom Fort travels along the 92-mile-long road from the Hampshire town of Basingstoke to Honiton in Devon. Originally designed in the 1960s, the route has been the subject of many proposed upgrades - several of which were strongly opposed due to their potential impact on sites of historic and natural significance, including Stonehenge. The programme charts the highway's turbulent history, as well as examining the development of the region over the past 5,000 years, and Tom meets several characters on his journey. Part of the Landscape season.

seriously there is nothing especially nice about the 303- drove it 4 times a week for 2 years, and it can be one of the worst roads- the single carriageway bits are a right ain- especilly up to Stone henge, down into chicklade etc etc, all you need is a lorry and you are caught for 40 for miles.
on the other hand, some of the best driving roads in the Uk are down there. one of my most memorable drives of my life was midnight on a summers evening, just me, my audi S8 and a bright yellow 911 turbo. We absolutely kept to the speed limit, and certainly didn't do Taunton to Camberley in less than an hour.

I wonder if it's a pilot for a series? It seems a strange topic for a one-off documentary.
I used the A303 for decades but still learnt something new from the programme, pity it was filmed in the winter though and didn't show the road at its worst with mile after mile of stationary traffic. I loved the Ilminster by-pass segment with the road kill nutter getting excited at seeing a dead badger that reminded him of one he'd found 15 years previously.
