Had a bit of a Family guy Marathon recently and I can't work out if they can here Stewie when he is rambling, I know Brian understands him but what about the rest of the family, in some episodes it seems they do in others the don't.

What does PH think about this?

Thanks

I know I need to get out more

I had same debate with the OH last night.... Also puzzled as to why Brian eats dog food, sleeps on end of bed.. Yet can be an academic, driving, babysitting member of the family, even managing to pull women.

The way Stewie talks to Lois, one would assume they can't hear and it's a sub-text below the radar as she talks over him when making death threats/plans for world domination.

N.B. Stewie when in "You owe me money man" mode, dishing out a beating to Brian..... best episode ever

The series never really asnwers this - even to the point in one episode where Brian says to Stewie

"You know - this is like how the family can't hear you, I can and I get the feeling we are being watched, and most scarily, those people (i.e. us the viewiers) can understand you"

I can't remember what episode or the exact script but there is a part at the end of an earlyish episode, somebody (not in the Griffin family) asks "So, can they, you know, understand the baby or what?"

The answer is supposed to be, yes they can but they choose not to because he shouldn't be speaking.

They fail on one episode where they're in a room filling up with water and lois directly argues with stewie over which godfather film is best.

Series 2, episode e peterbus unum (the one where Peter starts his own country). At the end it cuts to a classroom of real people and the teacher asks if there are any questions, and one of the students asks something similar to what you said, can't remember the exact wording.

Brian understands him, but I don't think the rest of the family do all the time. It's hard to be definitive because there are a lot of occasions where the family do talk to him in a way that they wouldn't be able to without knowing what he had said, but I guess that's part of the joke to keep us guessing.

I do often wonder about the women Brian pulls (especially in the bedroom scenes) and think "you sick cow. You're doing the dirty with a dog!"

Fair play to him though.

likewise..... In the end I gave up thinking, and went back to chuckling with a mouthful of earl grey tea. Whilst the OH sat there thinking "what am I with"

I've always thought that the family do understand what he is saying, but choose to interpret it as the silly childlike ramblings that are par for the course with children in general.

The new series on BBC3 recently has been absolutely rubbish.

::facepalm::

That's the brilliance of Brian's character, that he is all those things you said but can still be distracted by going "who's a good doggie?" or taking him for a ride in the car... And they tackled it in the one where he finds out he has a son when Stewie says, how can you have a son who's 14 when you're 7? Brian says it's dog years and it's left at that. it's part of the subversiveness of FG that these things happen and the son is human not half dog

they do it with Stewie, i remeber an early episode that he threatens to kill peter because he didn't acknowledge the picture of an owl he made out of pasta shapes. Evil genius-->still a baby

FFS I'm analysing Family Guy! Need to get out more...

It's a joke. You're never sure if they can hear him or not.
Brian obviously can.

They mention in one episode where stewie goes to talk to clevelands wife Loretta that she's such a side character she'll be able to hear him speak!

Stewie: "Brian how can you have a 13 year old son, your 7!"

Brian: "Yeah, dog years!"

Brilliant!

What about the episode with Frank sinatra Jnr. Stewie comes on stage....

F S Jnr. "These people paid could money to get in here"

Stewie "Yeah, but how much you charging them to get out"

The crowd laughs, so they obviously undertand him. Still a very funny program though. Sorry for bringing this up and making everyone think a little too much about a cartoon.

biggrin

Series 11 on BBC3 I think? The way the series are released is a bit odd as the dvd sets are rarely the same episodes (e.g season 10 dvd set contains the first 2 episodes of season 11 confused )
