I was eating at the time, pretty impressive stuff. What was wrong with his original hands?
Burnt in a car fire. That and an exploding windscreen.A bold decision to go for the transplant since his own hands weren't useless.
Absolutely amazing when you think about the complexities involved. Very brave guy and a truly amazing bunch of medical folk.
I wasn't able to give it my full attention as I was with friends, I'm curious though, it mentioned about how the bone marrow would eventually be replenished with his own and so on. Given how thorough they've been in connecting things like nerves and blood vessels etc - did it give any mention about the tissues etc and how the body would adapt with those in the future?
Now biology isn't something I've studied for a long time, but what's the deal with dead tissue and cells etc? I know he'll be on pills for the rest of his days to surpress his immune system so it's not rejected. Assuming there has to be blood flow through most if not all of the blood vessels for the tissue not to waste away - so if there's blood flow is there cell replacement going on and the like - same question with regards to skin cells and the like. I'm guessing the arms will forever remain a mere 'host' for the nerves and blood vessels, but if cells can't be replaced by the body surely the tissue etc wastes as it's essentially dead then - which I'm guessing makes up a substantial part of the risk of rejection if that's the case?
