I saw the aging motoring pundits yet again putting the knife into the new MG on last night's show. The same knife that surely helped sink the original company six years ago. I think there is a growing consensus that these guys are overpaid, badly dressed tts and that the BBC really needs to refocus its motoring programmes.

Really annoys me!!! Yet if it were any other European (i.e. non-UK) non-luxury/sports barge they'd be looking for the sunshine out of its rear end.

GRR!!!!

Now awaiting the 'Pro' abuse responses as always...

If it was any other Chinese car it wouldn't get the time of day. Don't be blinded to its dull looks and ancient technology because it wears what used to be a Britsh badge.

If the car was any good, (reviews suggest otherwise) and actually built in the UK (and not just a CKD) then maybe.

You are joking, right?

It had nothing to do with the cars being crap?

can't say about the mg6, but i remember people complaining when TG did their negative secret road test of the sttyrover thing.

I had the pleasure of riding in one shortly after. They were spot on, it was dire.

Much as I would like the "new" mg to be great, i suspect it won't be. Much as i would love it to be built in britain, it won't be.

If you want to support "british" engineering, go for something that is made here. A nice British car like a civic, or crv.....

Quite. MG Rover went down because they made rubbish, overpriced and outdated crap and sank vast amounts of money that should have been spent on new models into motorsport and the worst management model they could have possibly thought up.

In truth I was bit annoyed about that as well. I suspect that TG have never even seen the MG6 for real, nor sought to understand how the car is actually manufactured. It is not assembled in China as I understand, but rather it is built in Britain from parts ( mainly) imported from China. So they were wrong there, too.

If the car is crap, then fair enough, but I do not think it is fair to say that unless they have actually sampled it.

They played it for cheap laughs. It was pretty lazy humour IMO.

And given the MG6 price point, I suspect it is competitive with others in its group from Kia, Hyundai et al..

Their idea of a new model was to change the bumpers and lights on the old one.
You can get away with that once, maybe twice but no more.

I had a look at the specs for this new 'MG' a few weeks back, and concluded that it would fail. It is not a sports car in any way shape or form, and there are now many standard hatchbacks with miles more grunt and performance - why on earth would I want to buy this Chinese rubbish when there is so much better out there for the same cash?

Would the OP have been miffed if they had been negative about any one of the dozens of other makes of Chinese cars?

The last MG was aimed at hairdressers, gays and girls and the last Rover was aimed at middle aged Archers fans, but I can't work out the target demograph for this car

from what <i've seen, the new MG performs worse than its (at the very least) 10 year old predecessors! I don't agree with your comments regarding demographics, though. The last 'real' MG's wern't really that bad, and I'd wager that they're still a lot more fun than the new MG.

more like a mere nick on your little finger compared to the crap design, badly built, unreliable, poorly serviced, old design "knife" which hung drew and quartered the company.

not sure about the "pro" abuse but it is faintly amusing that you have the biggest chip on your shoulder about the demise of MG and therefore lay it at the feet of TopGear. The buying public was the demise of MG, ie the public didn't buy enough!

Just thought I'd google a review or two.

Seem pretty good to me. I'm no MG fanboy but I also thought they were being overly harsh last night - the low point in an otherwise excellent programme.

Sorry but the death knell for MG sounded when they stuck an MG badge on a maestro.

It was a doomed brand from that point on.
Now its a doomed chinese stbox brand.

Let it die.

Must admit I'm with the OP on this one.

Had a look at the new MG6 last year at MGOC at silverstone...... And yes some parts of the car are dated (the engine for a starters is a "revised" K series 1800) the brakes were 90s beemer stuff, but the car itself was actually really nice.

Different from the usual euro-box stuff.

As for quality of the last MGs......... Well I've had a ZR, and would happily have another as it was endlessly reliable, cheap to run, and easy to work on.

1x mate runs a 2.5v6 ZT and adores it, not his daily, but a lovely wafter with a bit of difference compared to a derv mondeo.

2x mates had ZRs as well. Enjoyed owning them, and the basic nature of service meant cheap to run

Mothers workmate had a ZS from new for 5years and it was a good car too.

Suspect the image, and those that take Mr Clarkson as gospel is against them though..

yes Evo magazine had good things to say too:
http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evocarreviews/2659...

No point getting worked up about anything JC says though. He can't exactly be considered a serious motoring journo; he's an entertainer and says things to be controversial and/or amusing.
