I know i'm approximatley 18 years late to the party, but having only got round to watching it last night, i just want to express how moving and beautiful (if you see what i mean) it is.

There are certain films i can watch over and over, such as The Hustler, Goodfellas, Back to the future etc, and i think this is going to be one of them now.

I watched it once and promised myself never to watch it again. It is a very worthwile film and everyone should see it once. But I found it too harrowing to warrant repeat viewings.

What I find harrowing is how it has now become open season to slag off the Jews and Israel by the repugnant leftie ‘intelligentsia’ to the point of wanting their homeland (that the west agreed to!) wiped off the face of the map. The left hate history for good reason.

I was fairly late to the party as well, caught it last year from Lovefilm. Fantastic.

If you want another great film in a similar vein check out the Lives of Others

And 'All Quiet on the Western Front' - also should be mandatory viewing.

It was on a couple of weeks ago - The Boy in the Striped Pj's.

It was good.

Different league to Schindlers list howeever.

The book of the boy in the.... is far better than the film I thought.

I presume you mean the 1930s black and white version. There was remake in 1978 or so with Richard Thomas (John Boy in The Waltons).

I do indeed - The Lou Ayres original, in fact I'd quite forgotten the later one and am still trying to pretend it never existed. The b/w one is hard going but very moving IMHO.

The Pianist is an amazing tale of survival and despair, Brody's perforance deserved the Oscar too.

The boy in the striped pyjamas is good, but nowhere near as good as Schindler's list.

Hotel Rwanda is a great harrowing film.

Moreso than Schindlers' list I think.

Very good film.

Two little bits of trivia,

- The house where Goethe (sp) is portrayed as shooting Jews from the balcony actually stands to this day in Krakow. However the house is on a slope, with the former ghetto site above and behind it....and the balcony is on the opposite side of the house...so this scene is completely fictitious and couldn't have happened.

- The scenes at Birkenau (Auswitz) where the trains roll INTO the camp are the opposite in reality. The filming indeed took place in the former camp but the authorities didn't want the train to actually be shot rolling into the camp so they let it role out (from the inside) but in the film the audience is led to believe the train is going in!

I spent part of my time at Uni studying the Holocaust and in particular the landscapes both then and now. Full of useless trivia!
