On Friday, my Sky Dish broke, the lnb fell off the end and is still hanging by the cables about a foot under the dish.

Ive got to be honest, for what I pay for (I think I have the Entertainment package with Dual Sports AND Multiroom), I haven't really missed it. Ive spent a few hours each day over the weekend watching downloaded episodes of IRT Season 5, episodes 10, 11 and 12 are downloading at the moment, episode 5 is on over here on Thursday.

Why am I paying the Murdoch empire £65 a month, when I can get all the TV I want to watch, online, when I want to watch it?!

Has anybody got rid of Sky/Freeview/Freesat and watched stuff online?

I had a quick browse through the site I am getting IRT from, and they have everything I watch (IRT, 2 1/2 Men, CSI Scrubs) along with pretty much every other program ever shown. I certainly wont miss anything.

How would it work with the TV License? I've read that if you cant receive Live TV, which I wont be able to once I've ditched SKY, you don't need a license.

The only thing stopping me doing it right now, is F1, MOTOGP, WSBK and BSB. Can I get them online, as close to live as possible, without needing to worry about a license?

Thoughts anyone?

When I moved I didnt bother resubscribing to it...I think its expensive for what you get, and you then feel somewhat obliged to watch it to justify it.

I dont even have a TV connetced to an aerial anymore - I just stream anything I want to watch via the PS3..so iPlayer, 4OD and ITV-whatevertheycallit...

I find myself only watching things I had planned too, less adverts and no flicking through channels either of course.

I also find myself outside a lot more than I did!

Years ago I got rid of Sky (they dicked me around or something, refused to say sorry blah, blah) so I told them I was leaving. I think the woman on the other end tried to "call my bluff" so I did actually end up leaving.

I didn't miss it at all - Freeview was more than enough for me.

However, about 8 years later when my eldest was/is old enough to have friends talk about particular programs that he had no idea about (Ben 10!) I decided I'd have it back for his sake. Again, I know I'd not miss it if it were gone but he and his brother would.

That said, I'm getting BT infinity soon and maybe I'll be able to use that for my TV (Ben 10 in particular). If so, I'll have no qualms in getting rid of Sky.

Oh, you will get loads and loads of phone calls asking if you'd like to come back. They'll typically give you incentives etc. but I left on a matter of principle so wouldn't have. It was only when I got jolly stern with the Sky representative that the calls stopped.

Oh and getting through to the cancellation department takes AGES and AGES (like an hour on hold, easily). Funny that when the sales calls get answered very quickly.

I download a few TV shows I am unable to get through Freesat, but find that the picture quality suffers. If you have no issue with quality then go for it. I tried an online streaming site for motor racing, but found it pretty unwatchable. I guess that is more due to my internet connection speeds, but regardless it isn't an option for me.

I agree, petrol is far too expensive, so I just fill up then drive off without paying. £80 a tank when I can get it for free??

I have Freesat for when I want to watch the news or just channel hop, everything else is downloaded.

Been that way for years and the only issue I can foresee is when the GP moves to Sky, but that's what friends are for wink

We will do this when the last of the kids move out.

I will miss the discovery channels at 240 and 520 ranges though. The rest of it is tosh repeated over and over with the possible exception of Motors TV.

Mine did that, you can just wedge it back in and tape it up with some heavy duty tape. Mine works fine now.

National Geo HD has to be one of the better reasons for paying for Sky, that and having access to the on demand films available through the Xbox360, I'm always amazed at the choice.

We have been thinking the same. We have the HTPC on more than SKY HD nowadays, as it has all of our movie and music libraries (quite literally everything on hard drives), and has a TV tuner, too.
I wanted SKY for the new movies and history channels - but over the past few weeks, there hasn't been one movie from Sky Premiere that I have wanted to watch - and you can seemingly get about 90% of the history channel content via You Tube! (or cheap as chips boxsets without the adverts every 5 minutes....)

Thanks for the responses. Its been an eye opening weekend for me, I pay £780 a year for Sky, and when its not there, I'm not bothered by it at all. There was BSB and F1 this weekend, and while I kept up to date with the results, didnt feel the need to watch it. When the GP was on, I was at the Shooting ground.

I'm not all that bothered by Iplayer, ITV/STV Player, 4OD. Apart from the F1 I very very rarely watch 1-5 anyway. Cant remember the last time I watched anything on iPlayer.

Im very tempted to phone this afternoon and cancel.

Cheers All.

It doesn't have to be that expensive. I get all the entertainment channels + sports 1 for £15pcm on a 6 month "deal". Every time the deal comes to an end, I cancel and they give me another 6 months. Last time I cancelled they gave me £50 credit as well, so it's more like £7pcm.

Well I just have freesat as could not justify the cost of sky for my usage...

However when I need to watch the occasional sky sports event I use Sky Go. Luckily my in laws have the full whack and would never bother watching online. So I registered one of my PCs that is hooked up to th tv against their account. Sky allow you to do this even though we are at a totally different address.

You can register 2 devices per sky account so If you have generous friends / family and they are not making use of sky go then worth registering against their account- it won't cost then anthing extra.

confused

The choice is pay for Sky and watch it, or dont pay for it and dont watch it. If were not paying, and not watching, what exactly are we getting for free?

Depends what you're watching really, I got the impression you're visiting an illegal download site from the way you worded your earlier comment. If you are using an illegal download site rather than paying for the copyright material you're watching I assume you can see the other guys point of view?

I'd like to know what original content Sky have come up with that anyone would actually bother to illegally download ...

If it was illegal I'm not sure it would be a standard function offered on the PS3 user interface (or free online from BCC, C4 or ITV themselves directly).

In fact, this way I dont even need a TV license either apparently, as I dont watch anything live or have the ability to record it. I must get round to cancelling it smile

Never had it and can't think why anyone would need it when there are however many dozen channels on Freeview. I am told that it's good for sport - which I never watch (apart from F1 on the beeb of course), so maybe that's why its never appealed to me.

£65 a month yikes

I got rid of it many years ago when the basic package went over £20.

Only had it in the first pace as I was living in Wales and only really got two watchable channels.

Quite happy with freeview. There are rarely any films worth watching and you could always rent them for well under £65 a month - or download them.

No TV reception here. Flat didn't have an antenna, and it's not worth buying one, getting one installed, or getting sky so that I can complain about how there's nothing worth watching on TV.
Ditch sky, buy DVDs, be happy. smile
