No... I would not like to put Robert Shaw through that. He has to spend time in there as well, remember. Poor little Shaw.

Loved this as a kid growing up in the 80's, mostly just for the suspense, horror and action. But watching it again as an adult, in particular the scene on the boat during the night when they are reminiscing shows another aspect of the film. Brilliant.

Love the section where they are 'towing' the yellow barrels about. Great music, and tension build up.

On a slightly related side note, Orca-Killer whale was a poor relation of Jaws, but enjoyable never the less!

Saw it at the cinema back in '75. Must've seen it 100 times since then. Still my all time fave.

Isn't it just?

Great soundtrack. Great actors.

Great lines:

You're gonna need a bigger boat

I flicked around last night, and caught this on ITV4 just as Hooper was examining the remains of the first victim.... a superb film.

Jaws was almost a completely different film.

The original screenplay had much more airtime for the mechanical shark prop.

Due to their unreliability, the filming was changed to just give "hints" of the shark (the barrels, the floating pier etc etc)

My view, is this is one of the things that makes the film so bloody good. (along with the chemistry between Quint/Hooper/Brody)

So many good lines in that film.....

SMILE you son of a B***h!!!

Probably my favourite scene in the film is just before Hooper and Brody discover Ben Gardner's fishing boat.... Brody is questioning Hooper about all of the technology aboard his boat, and Hooper looks at the sonar and "fish finder" and says:

"Wait a minute....... there's something else out there...."

With the music and the photography, it really builds the suspense beautifully, culminating as we know with probably one of the scariest moments I ever saw in a film as a youngster!

Shaw was on the verge of becoming a mega Hollywood star when he died at the quite young age of 51. He has starred in two of the largest grossing box office films of the 70s (The Sting and Jaws).

Roy Scheider is ace.
Benchley wishes he never wrote it now, glad he did. Also glad of the changes made in the film, makes it a solid story.

edit, just read the wiki, Marvin as Quint wuld have been good.
Also jogged my memory, a lot of locals were used to make it more real. The woman who slaps Brody really whacks him (not realising that in acting perhaps you don't use full force), they didn't expect this and the face on Brody when it happens is real. just read up on this and it was multiple takes.

Well, the only reason he wishes he never wrote it was because it severely changed people's attitudes to sharks.

Shaw's monologue about the USS Indianapolis sinking and the shark attacks is a fantastic scene.

I've not seen this for years, I shall seek it out.

Richard Dreyfuss is great in it too.
