We Need To Talk About Kevin - What is the point?!
Discussion
Had the misfortune to watch "We need to talk about Kevin" on a flight over the weekend and I found it to be borderline offensive.
Not in the Mary Whitehouse, "it offended my sensibilities" way, but in the "what was the point of sitting through two hours of deeply uncomfortable viewing with no redeeming features?" way.
Ok, perhaps there was one redeeming feature: the acting is superb, but that's like saying it's ok to watch a Ferrari Dino burn to the ground because the flames are beautiful.
Other than that, it was just a totally reprehensible film, with no point to it (that I could see), just a series of deeply uncomfortable scenes, escalating in their offensiveness until they stopped, without any sort of conclusion or closure.
I could possibly understand it if the film depicted a real story, but the fact that someone actually made this story up and then decided that it would be a good idea to make it into a novel, and others then decided to make it into a film, leaves me absolutley bewildered. Can anyone explain the point of this film?

Films don't have a point. What they do typically have is a plot summary though, which can help you decide if it's the film for you before you watch it.
Also, I've never sat the bar, but I'm fairly sure there's nothing written into law that implies you must watch from start to finish.
Looks an interesting film though ( I read the plot summary, see), must be doing something well to maintain the ratings it holds on IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes et al.

Films don't have a point? Aren't they supposed to be entertaining? Also, I've never sat the bar, but I'm fairly sure there's nothing written into law that implies you must watch from start to finish.

Obviously people find entertainment in different ways as it is a subjective term, but I don't think I want to meet the person who finds this film entertaining.
I read a summary of the film too - I believe it was in Virgin's "must see" column in the inflight magazine, but unfortunately, until I'd watched it all, I couldn't tell whether I'd like it or not. It may have had a killer ending that led me to an epiphany of epic proportions, but until you've sat through it all, you have no way of knowing.
I also had 7 hours to kill in a cramped aircraft cabin at the time of viewing and it was the return trip, so I'd already watched the films I'd wanted to see and was left with the "best of the rest". Otherwise, I would have ditched it after 20 minutes.

Every review I've seen of it seems to suggest it's a really excellent, well thought and interesting film. So I'm going to politely, and completely, ignore your opinion and go and watch it anyway
Please report back when you do, I'm still waiting for someone to tell my what I missed and everyone else didn't.

So what else did you watch? I've not been to the cinema for ages and quite fancy going to see some good stuff.Japveesix said:
