The Bourne Legacy
Discussion
The first trailer has been released for The Bourne Legacy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2lQgmZQ1Ig
I must admit, I was somewhat against the idea of them continuing with this franchise without Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass but this trailer looks promising.
As long as they keep the thread of this movie and any subsequent sequels distinct from the Damon ones, then it looks like it could work - particularly loving the 70's vibe of the trailer.
UK release date is 17 August 2012.

Synopsis
The narrative architect behind the Bourne film series, Tony Gilroy, takes the helm in the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise that has earned almost $1 billion at the global box office: The Bourne Legacy. The writer/director expands the Bourne universe created by Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces us to a new hero (Jeremy Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films. For The Bourne Legacy, Renner joins fellow series newcomers Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac, while franchise veterans Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn reprise their roles.

Really hope it's a great film, don't want it sully the reputation of probably the best action trilogy of recent memory...
The lack of Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass is perhaps a worry, but the screenplay & directing is being done by Tony Gilroy - who did the screen plays for the Identity, Supremacy and Ultimatum.
He also directed 'Michael Clayton' which I liked, so I've got my fingers crossed for a decent Bourne spin-off

There is more to come :
Novels:
The Bourne Identity (1980)
The Bourne Supremacy (1986)
The Bourne Ultimatum (1990)
The Bourne Legacy (2004)
The Bourne Betrayal (2007)
The Bourne Sanction (2008)
The Bourne Deception (2009)
The Bourne Objective (2010)
The Bourne Dominion ( 2011)
The Bourne Imperative (2012)
Novels:
The Bourne Identity (1980)
The Bourne Supremacy (1986)
The Bourne Ultimatum (1990)
The Bourne Legacy (2004)
The Bourne Betrayal (2007)
The Bourne Sanction (2008)
The Bourne Deception (2009)
The Bourne Objective (2010)
The Bourne Dominion ( 2011)
The Bourne Imperative (2012)
Apart from the second film being almost unwatchable due to he cameraman having an epileptic fit - and Parkinson's - it's a good trilogy. This is the first film of 2012 I'm really looking forward to. Well, there is Bond....
Is that the dude from Ferris Bueller's Day Off in the trailer?!?

I have only read the original trilogy, excellent books. Has anyone here read the ones from 2004 onwards ?Novels:
The Bourne Identity (1980)
The Bourne Supremacy (1986)
The Bourne Ultimatum (1990)
The Bourne Legacy (2004)
The Bourne Betrayal (2007)
The Bourne Sanction (2008)
The Bourne Deception (2009)
The Bourne Objective (2010)
The Bourne Dominion ( 2011)
The Bourne Imperative (2012)
I read a few of Ludlum's newer collaboration books and for me they were ish at best. Not a patch on his early stuff ie Parsifal Mosaic, Matarese Circle etc.
Maybe it will go the way of Bond...just keep going...
but rather than continue with one central character, every so often it'll swap to a new face/name....as opposed to keeping the same name and changing the face...
The original trilogy is probably the most watched films I own...just not getting bored of them...

Funny how he took years to write the first few and then absolutely hammered the next seven after the films came out Novels:

Probably due to the fact that he died in 2001, and the other books were written by Eric Van Lustbader. Not saying he was cashing in on the success of the films or anything mind....

I am looking forward to this mainly because if it is a success Damon has mentioned that he'll consider reprising his role as Bourne and for me MD really worked well in the first three and will be missed. It's a minor sticking point and although I agree that the magic of the trilogy is going to be hard to recapture I really hope anyone who liked the trilogy will pay to watch this and support the franchise.

This is looking good and my doubts have eased, somewhat, particularly after reading this quote:

Nicely woven in are nods to Jason Bourne -- his name etched in some wood, his face on a computer screen -- and as writer/director Tony Gilroy told us recently, the events of "The Bourne Ultimatum" figure in the background in the opening ten-to-fifteen minutes of "The Bourne Legacy." But an interesting and exciting concept emerges here: the 'Legacy' is much more than just a simple sequel -- it appears to be running in a parallel overlap from the events of 'Ultimatum.'

Actually bit more worried after this latest trailer...
For me, one of the compelling (and even haunting) things about the Bourne films was the impassiveness of Bourne when under stress - it's like it's just the training taking over, no anger, no aggression, just action...Then afterwards it's like he's 'woken up', back to being a normal person again.
Hope touches like this survive the translation to this new 'Bourne brand' film, it's really what helps to elevate the previous trilogy from being just dull, generic action films.
Remaining cautiously optimistic
