Just nquired about getting the F1 channel through Virgin media which is who i subscribe with, they`ll give me all the sky sports (which you have to have to get F1) plus the F1 channel for 50 quid, but...its not in HD, anyone know why this is ?

I got a leaflet from Sky the other day saying if I upgraded to Sky Sports I got the F1 channel included or if I wanted to I could just upgrade to the F1 channel.

Sky Sports package was something like £50 a month and the F1 only package was something like £30 a month.

Virgin obviously have to have Sky's permission to air it's channels so I'm guessing they've given Virgin the rights to air it with the clause that it's customers must upgrade to all Sky Sports channels. This way they're making money off people upgrading and people who decide to switch to Sky so that they don't have to pay for channels they don't want.

If you don't want sky sports, Any sky tv HD package will get you the F1 channel.

Correct, I don't have any Sky sports channels but i do have the HD option, F1 comes FOC with that option.

Sky won't let them have HD, that's why. IIRC it's as a result of a fairly complicated reciprocal argument, but that's the essence of it.

Sky own the rights and can do what they like with them.

That's the reality of "exclusive" deals between sports governing bodies and TV rights holders.

Some day, there will be NO sports avaiable unless you are willing to pay extra for them.

As is usual for Virgin, sky will make them wait. We waited ages for sky1 etc. it's the usual exclusivity PR machine that sky has!

Fair play to them, but it won't detract from my viewing experience having to slum it with non HD.
