Great film, and one I rarely manage to watch in one sitting! (I have the epic-length directors cut)

The book manages to convey the boredom they suffered at sea very well; it's quite a chunky book, and not a lot happens in it! Good read though.

Whenever I see this film it somehow reminds me of my "old-man" trying to fix the bathroom taps rolleyes

There's a funny thing abot film submarines (this one possibly excepted).

They are attacked and pipes burst and water shoots in all directions. But all you have to do is turn a handy tap and it stops. I'm sure it wasn't really that easy!

erm that is from Crimson Tide....bit more high tech....

in Das Boot they were using ASDIC (sp?).

the extended cut is brilliant though

There is something about the convoy surface attack run in the film that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

One of my all time favorite film sequences.

I read somewhere, years ago, that the actors didn't go outside in daylight for several months so their skin could develop the white pallor the u-boat crew would have.

Yeah it was shot mostly in sequence so the actors became paler and their beards grew longer as the film progressed.

Incredible film.

Fascinating stuff:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Das_Boot#Production

Especially learning that the Captain of U96 met Jurgen Prochnow during filming (1979-1981).

One of my 'Top 100' films of all time.

In my top 3 fav films, don't expect I'll be able to make the OH sit through it again though, I already made her watch the mini-series version smile Be interesting to see which version they actually show- I have the Director's cut, mini-series and BBC versions, and only the BBC one has accurate subtitles. In the director's cut, the sound and picture are ace but the yank-done subtitles say things like 'oh no!' when the captain is clearly saying 'scheisse!'...

Brilliant film.
Main thing how it portrays the conditions with an eye for realism.. and not satirizing the German crew..
The convoy pursuit scenes still make the hairs on my neck stand up.
