I can't see the porn industry declining. Sure the format may be changing, less people buying magazines and dvds, more people subscribing to online sites, but the demand will still be there, and porn isn't made for free [unless you count the homemade variety].
The porn industry is no different than the music industry. The media format is changing, and a whole market for 'free' music exists, but people are still making it, and being paid for it.

Interesting article - I remember his program about the Porn industry and how it was about to 'go mainstream', so it's interesting (and rather tragic) to read the rather seedy truths about the lives of the 'stars' of this industry on the slide.
I'm sure someone will go on making a lot of money out of it, but it seems a lot of people in porn are far from 'living the dream'.

Porn is an interesting one. I had dinner with an ex-CEO of Playboy Europe a couple of months ago and we had a long conversation about the business case for pornography. Now that there is so much content available for free online, the traditional players are finding that their core revenue generation activities are slowing rapidly and, in some cases, stopping almost overnight. In Playboy's case, the US organisation stood against diversification, which really hit global revenues.
Porn, right now, is at a real crossroads, as its proliferation has created an insatiable demand, but without the revenues available to the likes of Vivid, Playboy etc, it is hard to see why the talent would want to stay in the business. A lack of talent, combined with a lack of money will eventually lead to a lack of safety and potentially the whole industry will collapse in on itself.

I have no idea how the porn industry is making any money right now, who exactly is going to go online to some snide looking site and hand over their CC details to buy something that is available (in any flavour, size or shape they want) for free, via the 'usual avenues'. I have to assume they're only making money from the £14.99 a night hotel porn services. (tricky buggers to get expenses back on those).

I suspect most revenues come from advertising on the sites and from premium upgrades.
That's not really how it works. The big tubes (which are mostly owned by the same company) make revenue from advertising, but the content producers don't get any of it. The bigger content producers may do licencing deals with the big tubes, but smaller ones don't make anything from having their content stolen and uploaded onto free tubes.Gassing Station | TV, Film, Streaming & Radio | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
