Watching Universal Soldier for the umpteenth time, and got thinking, there are a pile of films that are so blokey, and so watchable, that few can match them. You k ow the sort. The Terminator, Predator, The Abyss, Universal Soldier, Commando, etc.

So what are the modern equivalents?

Yea, there were certain films made in the 80/90's which were pretty much perfect.
Not just in the action movie stuff, but things like Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, The Goonies...

Maybe it is viewing them through adult eyes that makes newer stuff just not have the same effect. Nostalgia would be the key in those cases.

The Rocky films, proper little boys makes you wanna get up and box with ya dad stuff. Even now the music (flying high now? and Eye Of The Tiger) makes the hair stand on end.

Agree with the last 2 posts. Love Rocky, (utterly under credited, especially the original, and the last one). I forgot First Blood as well on my list.

The Goonies, Time Bandits, The Holy Grail, and so on. Oh, and the Cannonball run and Duel.

The thing is that modern stuff doesn't seem to have this effect on me. It may be nostalgia, but the only film I can think of that I can watch repeatedly is LOTR, (extended version, obviously!). Nothing else really jumps out at me.

ETA, and hell yes, Mad Max films are in there, even the stty last one. And robocop, total recall, the Running Man.

Taken, The Expendables and at a push Sherlock Holmes are the best modern ones I can think of. The best of the classics for me has to be Terminator or Highlander.

Edit - I should add Die Hard and The Warriors to that list!

Good question. Modern ones are thin on the ground, but i think dredd might be one.

Honourable mention of course goes to roadhouse.

Roadhouse is pants.

I know the script to Highlander. smile I mumble Long which annoys anyone else watching. Where Eagles Dare is a good one. War films just aren't the same, really. They have realism now, but none of the 'adventure'. Another of that ilk was 'Heroes of Telemark' which was proper adventure type stuff. I think I prefer the older B&W British war films than any other type of war film. They seem a bit more honest.

That's weird, i love highlander. It's one of my favourite filums. But i also love roadhouse despite itself.

Aye. Was on telly late the other night and i still had to watch it again. The mona lisa one and the track up shot from underwater still look sharp as anything.

Would The Fast And The Furious be classed as a modern blokey film, it has all the right ingredients.

It's a shame but it doesn't surprise me, the way there going every film we have mentioned will be re-made at some point. frown
