Did anyone watch WSM?
Discussion
I’ve no idea if it was a repeat but over the last couple of weeks I’ve caught glimpses of WSM and saw the final last night. Holy sheet these guys are absolute monsters. I know you don’t really get a scale of how big these guys are because they’re next to each other most of the time, but one guy was 6’7 and over 30 stone.
I consider myself relatively strong and I’m no way a power lifter or do anything of the sort (I can pull a 200kg deadlift and I don’t use straps, chalk, belt etc) but I do go to the gym a lot! However, one event yesterday, these guys were deadlifting on a raised platform (so they had further to stretch) 360kgs for like half a dozen reps! Plus as they are so massive in height most of them, it’s even harder due to more distance to travel.
It’s insane the amount of power these dudes have. Just a quick question though, so excuse my naivety, but are these guys tested for steroids? Now I know you have to have awesome genetics to begin with (no drug will make your hands the size of dinner plates and your shoulders the length of an ironing board) but I really find it hard to believe that a human being could be THAT physically strong.
Don’t even get me started on the 220kg overhead presses.

The overhead press was a huge log with handles embedded. They did some form of deadlift the other day with some cars, but it was a different pull to the one I saw last night which was a free weight bar and they stood on a platform. I can’t remember the weights of the cars they were deadlifting but it was from what I remember around 500kgs and I don’t think they could reset between pulls, ie had to be a constant movement.

Haven't watched this programme for years.
They are all powerlifters, hence huge weights shifted.
No question. Also some of these guys are well young (early 20’s) and look old. They are all powerlifters, hence huge weights shifted.
I just looked it up and apparently they don’t test for steroids or performance enhancers but DO test for recreational drugs. I don’t know if that’s true but seems a little odd. Someone said that Pudz was disqualified a few years back for testing positive to an unnamed substance that the press reported to be coke?

I wouldn't think they get that big and strong on an apple a day.Don’t even get me started on the 220kg overhead presses.
I wonder what these guys could do with a bit of weightlifting training (if they are actually allowed to do a form of Clean and Jerk in competition)- WR is 263kg in the Clean and Jerk.

The log lift I said above of which someone did 220kgs is pretty much a clean and jerk.I wonder what these guys could do with a bit of weightlifting training (if they are actually allowed to do a form of Clean and Jerk in competition)- WR is 263kg in the Clean and Jerk.

Like you , i go gym (150kg 1rm bench.I consider myself relatively strong and I’m no way a power lifter or do anything of the sort (I can pull a 200kg deadlift and I don’t use straps, chalk, belt etc) but I do go to the gym a lot! i have watched the qualifiers over the xmas ,but missed the final (will be watching on demand).
i have a picture of me stood next to mark felix last year .I am tiny in comparison and he aint even one of the biggest ones.
whether they take steds or not , im guessing they do.No drug and i mean no drug will make you that strong ,thats years of hard training and good genes as a base.
I know guys that have done alot of steds and they all bench under 200kg cant squat much more than 200kg etc, while being juiced up all year round.
So everytime i watch i am truly in awe...

If a skinny adult started training, would they get broad shoulders like these guys? How much of the broad shoulder area is bone and how much is muscle? Has anyone done an X-ray?
Even a genetically skinny guy (narrow shoulders, not great bone density, smallish hands etc) would not be anywhere near these guys with all the gear in the world as far as I would gather. You have to have a good starting point in being well built.I’m 6’1, 90kgs and my shoulders are broad. I also have a long reach (It’s well over 80”) but I don’t have big hands and even at my relatively young age my knees don’t feel very strong (Oscar slatters(sp?) when I was a kid). And even with me, if I went on gear and specifically trained every day for powerlifting events I would not get where these guys are with years of training. Sure I’d be tough as hell but not near the power of these guys. Also, mentally I don’t know if I could do it either.
Also, look at Pudz (can’t spell his full name!). He won WSM 4 or 5 times and he doesn’t look like a powerlifter – he’s ripped to shreds! Funnily enough he’s started doing MMA and lost a lot of weight but AFAIK the MMA events he competes in don’t test for PED’s. That might have changed though.

150kg 1RM is well impressive. Have you taken anything? I benched 130kg earlier last year but the closest I've got since is 120-125kgs. But I don't specifically train for strength, just aesthetics haha.i have watched the qualifiers over the xmas ,but missed the final (will be watching on demand).

I don't take anything other than creatine which is one of the few food supps I've used that works. I also take ZMA capsules before bed (just started doing it again) and I am not sure if it makes a difference but I definitely sleep better on them and wake up feeling more 'with it' especially after a late night or heavy training session. Maybe it's a placebo but it works for me.
Kinda split in 2 minds at the moment whether to do a small bulking phase to over 100kgs, to stay the same weight and focus on clean diet and then rip for the Summer or just start trying to cut now. Ho hum.

I thought pulling a 24.5 tonne coach 25m in about 35s was pretty impressive myself
That's a point. Gutted our man from Dartford tore the ligaments(?) in his biceps. What a kicker - he won that coach pull event.
Tbh though I've no concept of pulling a large vehicle like that with a rope, so I find it difficult to envisage. The HR monitor for those events is cool - getting up to 200bpm is scarily high! I think I get up to about 180ish on the X-trainer when doing interval training and it feels like my hearts going to burst out of my chest.

when i was 21 ish (24 now) and in uni i took protein for about 8 weeks straight ,made me stronger for sure but didnt like how it blew me up so to speak, and i was just about doing 110kg on bench at the time .I don't take anything other than creatine which is one of the few food supps I've used that works. ever since i havent touched it ,had a break from serious weights for abit as i moved to a "posh" gym .
restarted 1st feb last year ,with no diet plan ,got to july got 140kg on bench for 3 .
Still wasnt happy with the diet , saw the hodge twins video on youtube about fasting ,started that in sept (eat during a 8 hour window) lost the fat from the wrong areas.
My strength stalled , was still hurting a week later (overtraining ,too many reps), so now im on the 5/3/1 strength program, which started end of november.Aftr 4 months fasting pretty much i ate and drank everything over xmas so back to gym today to start again.
my vitals
6" 2ish
104 kg(probably heavier now )
My current lifts:
Bench Press: 150 kg for: 1 reps (1RM: 150 kg)
Overhead Press: 60 kg for: 7 reps (1RM: 72 kg)
Squat: 100 kg for: 5 reps (1RM: 113 kg)
Deadlift: 140 kg for: 5 reps (1RM: 158 kg)
If you need any advice drop me a PM
