Love / Hate - Ireland's answer to the wire starts tonight on Channel 5. First of four series - you are in for a treat if you like a meld of the Wire / Sopranos and a bit of Aidan Gillen (Wire/Game of Thrones).

I'd no idea this was on. Looks good.

I like Aiden Gillen too. Good actor.

Of course.

In The Wire thread, it always makes me laugh when people say they gave up halfway through the 1st episode! The Wire is a saga. The best ever IMHO.

My disappointment with Love/Hate is that for gangsters, not one of them is even remotely intimidating. The guy who came back from Spain weighs about 8 stone and looks like a schoolboy.

That hurts its plausibility.

Apparently as it proceeds people have trouble sleeping after it.....

Also remember this first episode is around 5 years old now - hence the old cars as the "Bebo" reference!

Get past the first 4 episodes (not that these are bad just not gripping) and you'll see some of the best dramas made. It's quite realistic too and reflects a lot of gangland violence in Ireland and probably the UK.

I've watched the first two seasons now. Its laughable to compare this to The Wire or Sopranos. Its not even in the same league as them. Its watchable... but to compare it to either of the other two is ridiculous.

Reboot of an old thread.

Just started watching this on ITVx and I have to say, although it's quite old now I think it's brilliant - well worth a look.

I found out about Love/Hate long after the last season had originally aired.

Watched it a few years back for the first time- WOW is all I can say, it was (and is) incredible and criminally underrated.

For me as a whole some of the best TV, series wise certainly. Its almost never mentioned when 'best series' topics come up, I think only season 1 & 2 were shown on Channel 4 back in the day and as it was on very late and was maybe a bit niche being an Irish crime series they stopped showing it after season 2 I believe.

It has drama, edge of your seat suspense, superb performances, and an air of authenticity throughout.

The way the tension builds in the last two seasons especially is incredible to see and few things have come close, especially in this genre.

Highly recommended- didn't know it was on ItvX, will have a look.

Watched the lot now - the whole series is great but 4 & 5 had me gripped. 10 hours of TV in two nights! Brilliant!

Kin is the current crime series.
It isn't as good but still worth a look. 2 seasons made so far.
