Most overrated film of all time...

Well one of them. The film in question is Ferris Bueller's day off. Finally managed to record and watch it after hearing quite alot about it over the years.
All I can say is, what a load of b
ks, I've read some tripe on this film, some people waxing lyrical about how its a seminal film but seriously I thought it was just guff. For a started Ferris is deeply unlikeable. I just spent the film wanted him to get busted or his friend to realise what a total bellend he is and how he is using him for his own ends. Then there is the element to the film called comedy or lack thereof. I don't think I even raised a titter the entire film and I'm not really the sort who goes out of their way to not like but seriously, is a mohawk in the shower and singing into a shower head funny? hmm and whats the music set piece on the float all about.
I'm not sure why its held in such revere, maybe you had to be of the period. I.e an angst ridden teen in the 1980s. Me well my teen years were in the 90s. I was firmly disappointed.

I agree with you over annoying up-himself Ferris, but I enjoyed the film as a youngster - it was quite escapist to me as a young teenager, but it doesn't play back well when you have grown up a bit.All I can say is, what a load of b

I also think the problem with high-rated films are if you haven't seen them, just heard a lot about them then when you sit down and watch them, they are never as good as you imagine. When quotes and characters which may have been seminal then become repeated elsewhere and repeated in other films, when you go back to the original is often looks very cheesy.
E.g for me I can barely watch Apocalypse Now today because it seems hopelessly cliched. I'd imagine it was one of the first major mainstream vietnam movies, which is why it had such an impact initially with loads of very repeatable lines and scenes that were reprised in dozens of vietnam and war films since then.
Also, for quite a few years people I knew used to be able to recite entire Monty Python skethes, and roll about laughing. When I finally sat down to watch some of the episodes, they seemed like 99% s
t. Enjoyed Life of Brian - as I came across that without knowing too much about it, but Holy Grail also seemed very patchy, and I blame this on overexposure. Edited by prand on Friday 24th January 15:39

Shawshank - I have to agree with you, there's a book called "I can't be arsed" or something similar listing things everyone says you should see or do and says why you shouldn't and Shawshank's in there with exactly my theory for why it's so popular
Nearly every film with Richard Gere in (Orifice and a Gentleman, Pretty Woman) would be my nomination.
Lincoln must be a challenger too, although I need to try and watch it in a better environment than a plane, I guess, before consigning it to the dustbin of opinion.
I guess people of a 'certain age' loved Ferris because it's sort of a teenagers wet dream. I was a bit too old to really see it as anything other than a bit of harmless fun and had no idea it had ANY hype!

Most overrated, probably Avatar. Everyone ranted and raved about how fantastic it was. Really? Seemed pretty average to me. Mind you, the same could probably be said for Prometheus too. Not a bad film at all, but not film of the year as some people were claiming.
Ferris Bueller is one of my favourite films, but as mentioned age, era etc do come into it. I was 17 when it was released, and so the exact age Ferris & friends were supposed to be in the film. Being a fan of John Hughes' similar stuff at the time (Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Sixteen Candles, Some Kind of Wonderful) helped also. I can see how those '80s teen comedies/dramas may not translate all that well into 2014 for those not of that era!
As for most over-rated film of all time, that'll be Avatar. I imagine it's probably a nerd's wet-dream, but to me it looks like a kids cartoon with blue people riding dragons with some environmentalist bks hammered in. Yawn....

It's not the films fault, you're just decades too late - right time, right age it's brilliant, those of us who love it now, watch it for nostalgia's sake.
Oh, and the Ferrari is a fake, some sort of MG I believe, well made though.
For me it Citizen Kane, not a bad film at all, but it's always wins the "greatest movies ever" lists and all that, it's the emperors new clothes of films - I know people who will always give it as their "top film ever" and I KNOW they've never seen it.
