They tried to follow exactly the same formula as the UK show early on, SIARPC, various "tests", etc. Then realised that what people actually enjoy are the challenges. So each episode is now just a challenge. Maybe a silly one, but so what .... entertaining stuff.
And the last episode with the Bisimoto Honda Odyssey. A 1029hp people carrier. Through the front wheels. Insane.
I like it too. No audience, no SIARPC and no 'news' (sorry I meant knob gag) segment.
Only detractions are the constant recaps after the ad breaks and Tanners "WOO! YEAH! THATS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!" every 30 seconds. Apart from that I like the challenge every week format and it feels less scripted than TGUK.

Yeah, the first season where they just copied the British Top Gear formula slavishly (right down to the studio design) was pretty woeful. Once they just concentrated on the 'challenges' and the presenters stopped trying to play the Clarkson/ Hammond/ May roles, it got a lot more watchable.They tried to follow exactly the same formula as the UK show early on, SIARPC, various "tests", etc. Then realised that what people actually enjoy are the challenges. I think the Aussie version folded because they just kept trying to copy the UK formula exactly and didn't adapt to what worked, like the US version did.

But Top Gear (UK) is very different to Top Gear (UK) circa 1977 when it first started. It evolved to suit its audiance. Top Gear (USA) has done exactly the same, only much quicker. Using your logic when Top Gear (UK) was re-launched in 2002 as a completely new format it should not have been called Top Gear!!If it's something else, call it something else.

People have warped memories of old Top Gear. It was boring.
If you were lucky it would start off with an entertaining supercar or sports review then switch to Quentin Wilson banging on about the market for used Metro's and Montego's, then latterly they'd have a bike review that i wasn't at all interested in. I got into the habit of watching the first 15mins for the interesting car, then turn it off.
When New Top Gear arrived, they tried a similar structure. How long did the used car bit last? One series before it was deemed too dull for primetime entertainment audiences. And good riddance.
That's not to say the current format is amazeballs but the challenge-fest is still a more enjoyable watch than old Top Gear.
