One of my old bosses, who was Indian, said most of Bollywood is funded by the Indian underworld...too pretentious for me personally. The dancing and singing get in the way of the plot.

I'm not a fan, but I guess it's a cultural thing.

Do they still have those appalling shrieky and distorted singing tracks?

Seems to be a resounding 'no' to Bollywood, then, which I suppose is to be expected - it does still only have niche appeal in the UK. To answer your question, watch any recent Bollywood film and you'll find the songs are fairly decent, some are better than others. 'Ek Villain' for example has a very good soundtrack.

Yes, I believe the point about the funding is true - but then many industries worldwide receive funding from dubious sources. Funnily enough, the dancing and singing is part of the main appeal for me, it makes the film feel like more of a performance as opposed to being 'just a film'. IMO it makes Hollywood/British films seem quite boring in comparison. It does require a certain mindset to enjoy it though.

Interestingly, Hollywood film studios are now producing Bollywood-style films, primarily for the Indian market although I wonder if it will raise the profile of Bollywood in the west - 'My Name is Khan' was a good example of this, and Disney's 'Khoobsurat' is a remake of a 1980 Bollywood film.

biggrin There's plenty of that in Bollywood now actually. The likes of Sunny Leone are now leading stars in Bollywood films...

Edited to add that this old thread would suggest that there are/were some fans of Bollywood on PH after all:

It's the main form of escapism for many in India - it's just about the only thing working class Indians have which lift them out of their drudgery.

Standard script:

- Rich girl meets poor boy
- They fall in love
- They sing and dance around trees
- Girl's father finds out and bans the relationship
- Girl and boy are adamant and continue
- Girl's uncle, who is some police chief or politician, hunts down boy with mercenaries
- Scene of great tension, where all women are wailing
- Cue dramatic reversal of fortune - e.g. someone discovers boy is long-lost prince
- Girl's father hugs boy like his own son
- Girl and boy get married
- They sing and dance around trees

It's boring as st!

It kind of reminds me of 80s kids TV or carry on film but within more saris and singing, very formulaic.
