I find the subject matter interesting, but the programme itself is rather padded out and light on facts.

Indeed. It could be so much better, but it seems to be aimed at people with the IQ of an 8 year-old. It's all breathless "experts" remarking "what could this be? why is it there? instead of simply describing the engineering feature and telling us how it came about. Presumably it's aimed at the audiences in the US, who need to be led like babies.

Interesting show spolled by rubbish scripts. I srill watch it biggrin

Yes, exactly. It's all very drawn out and then when they finally do tell the answer, they don't go into much depth or detail, as they've wasted so much time teasing you with the questions.

Still, it's a good stepping stone for further independent research.

I already knew about Battleship Island, for example, having read some interesting articles and websites about it. But if you weren't aware of it, and googled for it having seen it on the show, you would find those aforementioned articles and websites.

The episode with the Over-the-Horizon radar installation near Chernobyl was a low point, though, when they asked if the reactor disaster was cause or effect, as if the radar installation could have caused the disaster, FFS.

In fairness, the Nazis did build a lot of stuff that has since been abandoned. And since they tended to build with concrete, it's survived.

The episode I'm watching right now is about Jussarö Island in Finland, and is asking "But why are there bullet holes everywhere?" and a talking head expert saying "It looks like a war zone!"

Wikipedia gives a far more mundane explanation:
"In Jussarö some abandoned buildings still remain; which were used by the military until 2005 for urban war simulations"

Thread resurrection!

I've only just discovered this show and wondered if there was a thread on here about it.

I agree it is a bit superficial without much real substance but I've learnt quite a lot so far, for example I had no idea:
- Cuba had round prisons with no cell doors
- There is a moving sand dune in northern Denmark
- The French built a completely bonkers water slope thing that they used instead of canal locks
- Henry Ford built "Fordlandia" in the Brazilian jungle to supply latex rubber for tyres.

Well worth tracking down if you like abandoned stuff.

20 minutes of content stretched over an hour; consistently irritating so I turn the sound down and look at the pictures.
