As another native of the area, I have to agree that voice/accent ruins it. Nice scenery though. George Gently gets my vote for the best North East detective show.

Sweeney, Professionals, Ironside etc. etc. are repeated repeatedly on ITV4 at the moment.

Er, because it's a dramatization of the Vera Stanhope series of novels and the production company are just depicting how Ann Cleeves, the author, describes her in the novels?

Well me and my wife love it. ‎Brenda Blethyn is great as Vera, and there's a great cast of supporting actors around her. As with any TV drama, there have been one or two plot holes and continuity errors, but nothing to spoil my enjoyment of the show...

New series just started and it’s more of the same with a story made far longer than it needs to be and the almost total lack of cctv being used.

Nice for a Sunday if you can flick past the adverts.

We'll be watching. Enjoyable series, great for location-spotting for us exiled natives. Brenda Blethyn has grown into the role, but the books portray an even scruffier person which was (I'm told) based on a real-life detective.

There was one episode that got on my tits once when Whitley Bay was continuously called ‘Whitley’ without the ‘Bay’.

I agree with the OP. I love UK detective series, but despite trying a few times, I just don't enjoy Vera.
