I reckon he could be quite good at that - an inspired choice maybe?

No. I read somewhere they wanted a younger audience, and a lot of women absolutely hate him.
I don't see the connection? Are you trying to say younger people are women? I don't see Clarkson as an odd choice, he's a well known name and proven presenter once you get past the mostly manufactured controversy (he only has to read out lines on WWTBAM, surely). Also hasn't he been though a divorce lately? So he'd need the cash.

I was more thinking he's old so not likely to appeal to a younger demographic and that it's generally women who watch game shows.

Chris Tarrant? He said he thought the formula had run its course...
It has, along with The Weakest Link and shows of that ilk. the wow factor went and I can't see Clarkson as being a draw. His TV chat show was fairly dismal.
Still, at least it's not monotone Jeremy Vine.
I’m not a totally dedicated fan of the show, I wouldn’t seek it out, but if I’m channel surfing, and it’s on, I’ll watch it, just to see if I can answer the questions.
I’m not overkeen on Clarkson’s style, and I can imagine him taking the piss if a contestant gives the wrong answer to something he thinks they should know.
I picked him up once at Paddington station when I was driving a Black Cab, he was going to the BBC at Portland Place, and he proceeded to rubbish Black Cabs as slow, underpowered wastes of road space, and Black Cab drivers as outrageous liberty takers, who considered themselves to be superior drivers to everyone else on the road.
I gave him a carefully measured, over polite response, studiously avoiding effing and blinding, although I really wanted to give it to him, big time.
He came out with the standard, “I don’t think I care for your tone”, which usually precedes, “I’ll have your badge”, but to his credit, he didn’t add that.
I said to him, “How about we go the rest of the way, (7 or 8 minutes), in silence?”
“Agreed”, he said.
