"The Terror" - anyone watching it?
Discussion
Just started this courtesy of seeing some rave reviews online and finding out I could get it off the AMC channel on my BT TV subscription.
Only watched the first two eps so far, but impressions are very good. On the one hand, really well done period drama but with a growing sense of foreboding and horror. The only issue I have is that the dialogue is really hard to understand .. a combination of the way people spoke at the time and audio mixing that seems to have a more muted dialgoue track than usual, maybe to get you to turn it up for the scary bits.

I finished it a couple of weeks ago - did enjoy it for the characters and the tone and the scenery, but feel they could have cut about 2 episodes out of the series as sometimes not much is happening.
The "monster" (the "meaning" of it, and the relationship with the Inuits) is never really explained, and by the end you do get a close-up look at it but then it looks a bit silly.

I binge watch the series 1.
It touches on so many real problems like depression, little side storys that aren't part of the main story.
But all better for it.
And some people you think are not good turn out to be heroes. Except Mr Hickey. Haha! Tuunbaq knew.
What a striking ending scene though. Beautiful.

It's a confusing watch. You need to pay attention with all the side stories and different characters. Its also very dark (visually), and can be hard to see who is doing what and how.
So far, meh, 6/10. The true story itself is interesting enough without needing some sci-fi to tart it up IMO.

Am be I going to be disappointed with The Terror? I’ve read Erebus (the story of Terror’s sister ship which went missing on an Arctic expedition) and figured this is a historical drama based on facts, doesn’t sound so reading the comments.
If you take away the creature, it is pretty factually correct I thought. There’s a fine mix of actors on the list too, I’d say it’s worth a watch if you have a passing interest in that piece of history and just ignore the creature part of it when it makes its few appearances. It’s also worth reading up on the ships recent history, amazing really that they were ever found.

It is, and the cinematography is nice, but "the creature" is such a big part of the storyline that it is hard to look past that. Give it a go and see what you think. It's passable with the creature, but would have been good without. It's a drama set in historical times rather than a historical drama, if that make sense.
I have seen episodes one and two, and so far it seems quite watchable, and as others have said seems, very well observed / portrayed for the period.
I just hope it does not do what that other long running plane crash on a beach / some kind of monster knocking holes through the forest, out there mini series did (it was so poor I cannot even remember the name of it)
This just went round, and round in circles, such that I could not be bothered to see the last episodes, and what the `monster' turned out to be.

Watched the first two episodes last night. The main thing I was thinking was how many supplies did they have to just accept wintering there for 1 maybe 2 years!!
They did use to take stupendous amounts of goods with them on these. From wiki on the real HMS Terror voyage

Terror was stocked with supplies for their expedition, which included among other items: two tons of tobacco, 8,000 tins of preserves, and 7,560 L (1,660 imp gal; 2,000 US gal) of liquor. Terror's library had 1,200 books, and the ship's berths were heated via ducts that connected them to the stove
The story itself is fascinating. The ships were both the latest technology for the day and fitted with everything they could have hoped for. Hence why (IMO) it would have made a good drama without something killing them at random times. Something did kill them at random times, but it wasnt something which lived in the Artic!
