what films do you think have been underappreciated? I'm not talking about bad films you like, but films which may well have been good (or bad) yet no-one seems to have seen/heard of them?

An old(ish) one for me here:

Until the End of the World.

Blew me away first time seeing it, and have seen it a few times since as I have the extremely long version which you need to set a day aside to watch it. hehe

A film to watch every few years, but nobody I know has a clue about it.

Only good U2song which I think was wrote for it. Don’t remember much about it other than it looked great.

Been meaning to watch it again for a while.

Honky Tonk Freeway

Bombed, high budget (rumours of money laundering front) and low return, but I think it’s great.

Rhino’s loaded!

Apocalypto

Blew me away the first time I watched it, I don't have many Blu-Ray discs , but this is one of them.

Because it had Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz it was classed as an 'easy' film and most people that saw it didn't appreciate the quite dark and serious undertones. And those that would appreciate it, didn't see it because, well, it had Tom Cruise ....

One of my favourite films...

Joe versus the Volcano is mine.

It's pretty crap as a romcom but that aside the rest of the film is a surreal, philosophical wonder which I never tire of watching.

Brilliant choice, I was telling one of my scriptwriters about this film the other day, I made him watch the opening scene in the car park as a way of how to start with a bang. Brilliant soundtrack too.

My addition;

The Hunter (2011, William Dafoe, Sam Neill) brilliantly shot on location in Tasmania, very un-Hollywood in where the script goes and another wonderful soundtrack. The book on which it was based is also very good.

Two Lane Blacktop - has a lazy feel to it for the most part but I always enjoy watching this, and probably overshadowed by Easy Rider and Vanishing Point.

GREAT movie. "Moving"

My contribution would be "Smoke"

Keitel, Whitaker, Hurt. To name drop a few.

2nd contribution would be "We own the night"

Perhaps not so unknown? Phoenix, Mendes, Wahlberg

The Butterfly Effect. I love that film but critical reception was generally poor

Arlington Road is my call. It takes a while to get going, but an amazing didn't see it coming ending.

Cracking Thriller, had me gripped right from the opening scene.
My suggestion would be 'Dazed and Confused',
Not many people I know have heard of it let alone watched it but it's superb, love the soundtrack, love the vibe of the film, one of my favourites!

One bit of trivia about the film; near the end when the 'Mondeo' slid around the bend and broadsided the bus (?) They fked that bit of driving up, it was meant to skid around the back of it. The impact flipped the boot open, revealing big bright blue bags of sand - to make it rear heavy to behave how they wanted. This is why they shot to the next camera angle so quickly after the hit, so it wouldn't be seen.

Difficult to think of this...since a lot of films I like that are not in the popular consciousness now were popular back then, they're simply old and don't get repeated.

Erm, The Black Cauldron maybe, that was so big, but it's probably the best DIsney of that era. The Black Hole as well maybe. Disney's most serious film?

Nightwatch, the sub-titled version is far better than the dubbed version.

The follow up Daywatch is worth watching but not as good.
