Storyville - Hurt Locker Hero
Discussion
This was shown on Monday - now on iPlayer
Have to say it was pretty intense viewing at times
The first few minutes of him - Colonel Fakhir - clearing the field kinda gave away forthcoming 'events'
All I can say is What a guy - he was a real true hero, a great loss ....
Needless to say, this was nothing like the daft Oscar winning film ...

What an exceptional documentary.
The Colonial was a true hero, a patriot and a maverick. A great man.
When his son said that he’s looking for some advanced prosthetic leg to reduce the pain that his dad was experiencing, but could not afford it, and the family was in financial difficulty, I was quite annoyed that the Americans did not help (obviously we don’t know the full story).
How does the ‘mobile phone trigger’ work? Was it set off by a pressure plate which then connects the current to make the phone ring? Or by somebody calling the phone remotely?
If the latter, then somebody in the last village must have sold him out and set him up? (Or a spy disguised as one of the villagers)

Yeah, for what the guy had been doing, you'd have thought the US could have coughed up a few $, a relative miniscule amount in the grand scheme of thingsBrotherMouzone said:

I believe it was simply someone calling the IED mobile phone, so there had to be someone watching to give the signal. If the latter, then somebody in the last village must have sold him out and set him up? (Or a spy disguised as one of the villagers)
Presumably, they not always watching ....
(Kinda reminded me of one of that Ben Anderson docu 'Holidays in the Axis of Evil' when they nearly got blown up by an IED)
I also thought he was setup - that house was a deathtrap.
Whether it was the 'owner' or one of the other villagers, it only takes one to tip off someone to set the bomb off
Quite why he wasn't able to get the Telecoms company(s) to turn off the phone network, I don't know ?
Would have made it alot safer....
I watched this at the weekend:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0btc456
It's a film about Colonel Fakhir Berwari who disarmed thousands of IEDs in Iraq armed with just a knife & pair of wirecutters. It's not the usual documentary style as he was followed around by assistants who recorded everything as he went about disarming hidden explosives throughout the years following the fall of Saddam & the rise of ISIS.
Some may think him foolhardy but he saved hundeds of civilian lives. It's incredible to think he went back to work after being blown up by a truck bomb & losing his leg. The tension is unbearable at times & it's not giving too much away to say it doesn't end well for him.
