Now that Chernobyl has finished and has raised the bar massively for what is possible in a drama based on a major event in recent history, what would you like to see as the next one developed into a similar series?

I would go for the Challenger disaster. In a way it is remarkably similar to Chernobyl in that it features the same issues of warnings ignored, cover-ups and lying for "the greater good," (Well at least NASAs greater good.) Remarkable that both of these landmark events happened in the same year and comparing the two cold war corporate/government cultures dealt with the fallout (excuse the pun.) of these two disasters.

Anyone got any other suggestions?

... not sure a disaster on American soil will be given the same treatment... HBO being American and all, might be "asked" to gloss over certain things etc... I don't know just a thought... ??

Something like the Thai cave rescue of the football team might be interesting...

Loads of big events could be made into a top quality HBO mini series.

The Cuban missile crisis
The falklands war
911
Tiananmen Square
Challenger disaster
Trump (still ongoing)

Given what we now know about the fella I reckon one about Trump could be done pretty well. If you want a disaster movie you couldn't want for a more worthy subject.

Jeremy Kyle Show

And best of all, a Jeremy Corbyn biopic

Pretty sure we'll be looking at Tom Hiddleston and Thandie Newton for the main characters (assuming Olivia Coleman isn't free of course! biggrin)

Brexit seems a prime candidate, not least because it could run to about 20 seasons! :S

The Andrew Wakefield MMR nonsense deserves a mini series.

I first thought maybe Deepwater Horizon but it's too recent to get that atmospheric near past look and feel and also been done as a movie. The Bhopal Disaster is probably a better one as mentioned.

Didn't know about Bhopal (Oooft!)

Falklands could be good given the Band of Brothers level of production. Maybe produced even handed from both points of view could be more interesting.

The Somme - concentrating on the generals, rather than the front line. If told correctly I suspect Haig would be rehabilitated and Lloyd George - well, not so much.....

Hillsborough. it has been told but much as i like him, with a bit less Ken Loach and more on how events conspire*.

I did try to watch The Looming Tower on Sky recently, having read the book. It was an exercise in how not to do this genre. i gave up after a couple of episodes. Like Zero Dark Thirty meets Comic Strip Presents.

Fukushima was no wear near the disaster levels of Chernobyl, it would make a rather dull series if not drastically over-dramatised.
