So, I was watching Strictly with the family on Saturday eve and observing the participants from all walks of life and something struck me... we now live in a society where the norm, like an on/off light switch, has changed and gay marriage is now legal and occupies equal status with 'traditional' marriages.

We have 'rainbow' familes, prominent public figures having children with same gender 'wives' or 'husbands' and corporations falling over themselves to adopt/usurp the rainbow flag. There is even a pedestrian crossing in Wimbledon that has recently been painted as a rainbow, I have noticed.

Given that the norm is now upon us, why is Strictly anachronistic and failing to reflect today's 'norm' in society in a traditional discipline (ballroom dancing) to an audience that is one of the largest, if not the largest on terrestrial tv? What nuance am I missing here as, for me, the dots aren't quite connecting...

The new head judge was on R4 a week or so ago, she said there would be same gender partner(s) next year.

I saw the Aussie version (well a couple of weeks of it) that had a ‘same sex’ couple. If they hadn’t mentioned it I wouldn’t have known - the second ‘Man’ in the same sex couple was done up like a woman and was smaller/lighter/more flexible etc. Than some of the female dancers.

Surely two women dancing together will have a disadvantage when competing against two men?

Same sex pairs are mot the norm in society. There's quite a few of them of course, buts it's not the norm. Nice SJW trolling.

Quite the opposite I would think. Most the women I know that I’ve seen dance are far better at it than the men.

But more to the point, who gives a fk? Or does everything have to tick all of the boxes nowadays?

Why do two men/women dancing together have to be gay.

Perhaps two men dancing together may have an advantage over other competitors, maybe they can do higher lifts or more dramatic moves.

I dont know, I havent got a fffinnn clue.

True, but very often the 'story' of the dance is portrayed in a romantic way. Not an issue for me at all, but the element of 'romance' is there compared to say... badminton pairs.

This kind of move springs to mind:

There aren't many women that could pull off a lift, surely?

But the men can do all the moves that women can do, and put one in a frock (entirely defeating the purpose) and it will still look like a mixed couple!

I agree with you though, who gives a st. I don't watch it now, and I wouldn't start watching it because they went all PC.

That would be my take on it. The partners involved are not couples, at least not when they start smile It's a mixed dance contest which has nothing to do with who you prefer sexually.

I suspect the more about appearing woke than anything else,

You mean you'll stop watching because you're a (closet?) homophobe.

I would have thought gender doesn't matter; like a classic tag team, one is the heavy one is the mover. Unless you want two heavies, and flip the power moves.

What, two hot women in short dresses dancing provocatively together are not going to attract a whole load of new male viewers and get a fk ton of votes? hehe

This 100%. It’s men dancing with women. What has their sexuality got to do with it?
