I watched the first one and quite enjoyed it so will stick with it.

Considering it's a German production I wonder if it was inspired by the refugee crisis from a few years ago and someone decided to turn the idea around and make Western Europeans the refugees?

Yes, it was. Another fairly old series that debuted on a satellite channel and turned up on "Pick" a while later.

I actually really liked it, in a cheap and nasty sort of way. I think I disliked every single character in it.
