Can someone help me to choose new cable/subscription set up

I posted this in HOME CINEMA but got no replies.
Why is this so difficult!?! Hahah
I am completely lost when it comes to this sort of thing but my parents are getting killed with their cable and i there is too much information on the web for me to make sense of it so i am turning to PH for advice/suggestions and real world application.
I live in the U S. And we have Verizon FIOS. The bills seem to keep going up and up even when in "promotional contract". This months bill for cable, internet and landline was $285!!!!
In an effort to reduce my father got rid of Showtime and HBO and other movie cable channels yet somehow the bill still increases.
Every one is telling me go to Roku or Fire Stick.
So i need something that has internet obviously and they want to retain the landline IF AT ALL POSSIBLE.
My mom needs her crap shows like all those s
t American singing shows and The Bachelor bull st. Other than that my dad just watches Christian networks and the occasional football/basket ball/base ball games.
What are my choices and alternatives?
I still dont even understand what ROKU is.
