BBC2, 8pm. Stumbled on this tonight, really interesting insight into commercial fishing and the characters who do it.

Just watched it on iPlayer, agree 100% with the locals regarding the proliferation of second homes and holiday lets in villages such as these.

Not sure what the solution is to be honest though.

Was it st Ives that have introduced a ban on developers building new stuff? Because they'll be snapped up for holidays homes. Hasn't helped them because they just went else where to invest and as a result the remaining homes went up in value, making things even more unaffordable for locals.

Really enjoying this series. There was another excellent one called The Catch. It was on iPlayer but available on YouTube now and well worth a binge.

My family all come from Portscatho but I've zero chance of ever living there as the whole second homes thing has driven prices sky high. Come winter the place is do quiet the local authority don't bother with the street lighting and there's zero ambient light from peoples homes. The shop, butchers and Post Office are all closed now too. What we do appear to have an abundance of now though, is new build housing estates. Cornwall is literally peppered with them! Timber frames, plaster board and prices few locals can afford. I consider myself really lucky to live and work down here but it's a poor county that has been fortunate with the cash it got from European grants. That said, I totally get (and agree) with the desire to leave the EU for the sake of the fishing industry.

I had a stroll around Cawsand in the depths of one winter and counted about 10 lit up homes in the entire village. Maybe there was an event on elsewhere.

What with remaining in Britain more and things like that Cornish TV programme with the bloke with his tits out whatever that's called, Cornwall's a bit of a no go for me in summer time these days.

The whole thing feels like a problem that has slipped beyond solving forever now.
