I've been listening to this with interest, I vaguely remember hearing about it on the news at the time. It looks like the Post Office went out of its way to ruin Sub Postmaster' s lives.
An interesting link to Private Eye who seem to have highlighted it too. https://www.private-eye.co.uk/pictures/special_rep...

Been listening as well. A shocking tale of institutional bullying. It’s not just churches that can close ranks and ruin people in an attempt to protect the institution.

I was aware of the story as I have been following it ever since it first surfaced 10 years ago.

I read the article in Private Eye a few weeks ago. It beggars belief (or perhaps not) that the Post Office would (a) behave like that, (b) get away with it, and (c) the principal villains all waltz into plum positions in other organsiations without a single shred of remorse.

Indeed listening to Angela van den Bogard in court was unbelievable, she deserves some sort of award for complete stupidity and arrogance. Bring back the ducking stools I say and she is a prime candidate.
Thank God there are people like Alan Bates and Private Eye to highlight humbug and hypocrisy.

Just to add to the beggaring of belief, Paula Vennells, who was CEO around the time that this happened, is an ordained C of E minister. She was awarded the CBE for services to the Post Office, and is now chairman of Imperial College Healthcare Trust.

I wonder if someone from Fujitsu programmed a back door into the computer system to syphon off the money and is now living it large somewhere.
Surely all involved cannot get away with such monumental stupidity and should be brought to the courts to pay.

Looks like Panorama are running a programme on Monday, good on Nick Wallis for sticking with this story. Shame it has ruined so many peoples lives.
Still I've donated £10 to change.org for the appeal hope it helps.

Many moons ago I worked for the Post Office and even longer ago I used to train Subpostmasters. When the story first broke it was obvious that something was wrong with the system (I had moved on by then) some amounts that these people were alleged to have stolen were simply preposterous there was no way you could steal £500 in some of the small rural offices they simply did not have the turnover.

One could hardly fail to be moved by the plight of these SubPostmasters.

It stuck me particulary, how dishonest the PO were to claim these individuals were the ONLY ones to have had problems with discrepancies with the Horizion system.

To add to their problems, their trade body was controlled by an individual who supported the PO 100%. Surely they would be paying a subscription/membership fee so could have reasonably expected the have their interests looked after?

Top marks to Nick Wallis for following this story through.

A mass conviction of ALL the Post office senior people implicit in this, with a long term in jail, is (morally) required. That includes one T. Benn.

What has Tony Benn got to do with the case in point?
News just in, he's been dead a while!

What an utter disgrace ‘Reverend’ (nut) Paula Vennells is. And who awarded her a cbe; she should be up in court herself.

He was Postmaster General in the early 60s. A bit of a stretch to hold him responsible.

The Times article from Saturday goes into a bit more detail about what the post office have been up to -
Not disclosing documents to such an extent that the judge has imposed something that makes it a criminal offence to not disclose documents (section 21)
Post Office management had a bonus based on meeting targets during the enquiry - its work was assessed by its own lawyers so they merry all the targets. There’s now talk of theft, false accounting and fraud…

I read in Private Eye that nobody from Fujitsu have been called to account yet.
