Virgin Media about to end..
Discussion
So my Virgin Media is ending end of this month
We have the full package with internet & my mobile sim. Think it was £99 a month for first year then goes up..
Mrs phones them yesterday and they're basically not doing us any deal lol said this is the new price and that's it!
So we have cancelled it from the start of next month. This is where it gets a bit tricky..
We are moving, well hoping too within the next few months and i don't really want to be paying more, its just not worth it. I don't want to get into another contract then have to pay to re set up in new house. I have been looking at maybe NowTV month by month internet as we are both WFH now but they want a £60 set up fee to not be in a contract !
Is there a way to get virgin to haggle down more? will they offer us something closer to the time or do we just bite the bullet until we get into the house and set up fresh then?

Assuming you are ok with your internet being cut off between the end of the Virgin contract and your imminent house move, i would be inclined to go ahead with the cancellation - unless they will allow you to cancel it on a 30 day notice period after the current contract lapses
Then take out new contract at your new house and get the new customer deal again

It usually would be OK but we are both WFH so we need something which is why i was just going to get a temporary internet contract and a new rolling unlimited data sim. i can live without the sport, have done for 3 months lol
I don't want to hotspot all day and then breach some fare use policy ?
Just seems odd they won't even keep our current deal the same or offer us something close

Before you cancel I would check what sort of speed you are getting locally from the BT line, particularly with both of you working from home.
We only have the option of BT where we are and I have encountered significant issues with WFH. Like it taking 3 minutes or so to save large excel files I have been working on.
Temporary localisation has solved some of those problems but not all.

Just literally to be online, i could hotspot 4g but is there any 'fair useage' policies in the sim only contracts?
Mobile SIM data is sold per GB, however you choose to use it is up to you and yes providing you have a 4G hotspot there's no reason you can't use it for WFH - but if you have any kind of remote desktop like Citrix, HorizonView or Microsoft RDS then these will rack up a lot of data usage per dayhttps://www.virginmedia.com/mobile/sim-only/pay-mo...

Hi Jag, how would i be able to do that sorry?
If you have any neighbours you are friendly with you could ask them to go on a site likehttps://fast.com/en/gb/
and tell you what they come back with. I would imagine most Neighbours sharing the same lines would get similar speeds unless anyone knows any different?
Mine shows 7.6 MPS which I thought was fairly decent until our IT support told me that probably meant I had an upload speed of 1 MPS, which I was then sharing with my wife when she was also using the home wifi.
Just bear in mind that home internet speed suitable for casual web browsing and watching Netflix may not be adequate if you are using memory heavy files or applications.
How many other comparable options have you got where you are?
Virgin Media, like a lot of companies, have CRM systems that will tell them what services you can get in your area, and their prices.
If VM are the only game in town for the services you're getting they probably know you don't have any other palatable options, so they've got no incentive to bend over backwards for you. On the other hand if there are plenty of choices then there's plenty of competition, and they will be more incentivised.
As has been said above you're basically in a game of chicken now.
Hotspotting off a unlimited data SIM is a totally viable way of WFH. Three offer it, for example

I moved recently, BT wanted £25 a month for 8Mb ADSL Max, no fast internet at this place.
I tried a few 4g data sims instead, found an all you can eat Virgin sim for £25, truly unlimited and I was getting huge speeds up and down.
I paired it up with a Huawei 4g wireless router, job done, no need for landlines or BT.
For work, on my iPhone I've got a Voda 4g sim, totally unlimited and unthrottled for £35 a month.
I cane both sims hard, tether lots of other devices and have had no issues at all.

I'd be wary of playing the cancellation chicken game with VM at the moment. At least as of 2 weeks ago they'd closed all their contact centres, they've got people WFH but at much lower capacity. They might just let you go which will make your own WFH tricky...
It's much easier to move house with VM than set up a new connection, I'd be tempted to take a fibre only deal from them for ease of move.

Normally 1000gb fair usage on 4g Sims.
Yeah i have just checked and they have said ''1,000GB in order to identify commercial use of our service for example, which is not permitted under our terms.'' so thats goodP-Jay said:

Cheers Jay, how is it easier to move it than just re set up with VM ? Durzel said:

You can just swap to a 30 day rolling contract, it costs more but you can cancel it in 30 days notice so no problems.
i am propably goin to do this with the sim, SMARTY is £20 for full unlimitedGassing Station | TV, Film, Streaming & Radio | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
