given the 'news' today that Little Britain is now deemed to be beyond the pale (would that be deemed a racist phrase by the usual idiots?)what others couldn't be made these days (not including the obvious suspects of Mind Your Language/Love Thy Neighbour etc)?

I suspect that Blazing Saddles would be a difficult sell these days (apart from the obvious and then numerous distasteful jokes) even though the butt of the jokes was racism, .

Only Fools & Horses had a number of gay references during its run. Watched one of the later ones last night as it happens: Boycey is talking about local villain Eugene McCarthy and says ‘rumour has it he puts death threats out on Muslims’. Can you imagine the kerfuffle that would cause now?

Mind your language and love thy neighbour are really interesting TV shows. Both are massively racist playing up to stereotypes, but both appeared at a time when the UK was trying to come to terms with 'race relations'. I think that both shows were trying to highlight issues and educate the great unwashed, but in hindsight massively failed anx possibly caused problems.

I watch a load of old British TV shows, and am mostly shocked when casual racism/racist language is dropped into otherwise non-racist shows, i.e. The Sweeney/Minder etc

Gone with the wind has been dropped from the HBO service. I suspect that most of the carry on films will be disappearing from small screen shortly due to sexist "jokes" in the not too distant future. Cannot say that I will miss them though.

I worked in India in the late 90's. One of the channels there showed re-runs of Mind Your Language. It was very popular...… go figure. Some people are very capable of laughing at stereotypes of themselves, without taking offence.

That is the one show that couldn't be further removed from the point of this thread.

this is one of the issues though - you are both correct that both were actually an interesting time for Britain and were (certainly in the case of LTN) nowhere near as racist as is made out, the white fella was played as a tool of the highest order and the West Indian chap was several steps higher but still an idiot. The wives on the other hand rubbed along together fine, what that says about how intelligent the writers viewed men as is open to debate hehe.

Interestingly I understand the It Ain't Half Hot Mum also is very popular on the Sub-continent yet is vilified over here and (likely) view as homo/trans phobic. It's a funny old world!

It's amazing How I Met Your Mother was made when it was (it finished only 6 years ago). One of it's main characters was a border-line rapist and nothing was ever said about it. In fact it was celebrated!

The great irony is that many of those apparently taking offence now are not part of the demographic that is the subject of the humour.
