Just been watching films with my daughter, and where for many films a sequel is a cashing in exercise there are a few that get better as the series go on.

Madagascar
Toy Story
Harry Potter, though maybe because it gets darker and more mature

Seems strange the obvious ones (to me) are kids films!

Aliens and Terminator 2 are the ones that spring to mind, though T2 is debatable.

Second this.
T2 is hard to split from the original although it had better effects but both were great in their own right.

Revenge of the Sith I'd say we're the best of the prequels.

Empire strikes back.
The Dark Knight
Lethal Weapon 2 maybe

Jesus H Christ.

I would put that firmly in the drawer marked "A sequel too far".

Evil Dead 2 - it's more or less a remake not a sequel but it's the version everyone remembers.

The most obvious have been mentioned- T2 (though more of a draw) Aliens, Mad Max & Rambo 2 and Evil Dead.

I think the Star Trek movies 2, 3 & 6 basically made the franchise legendary.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, as I haven't seen the others. But Oldboy is superb and is the middle part of a trilogy. If the first one is better than that I'll be very impressed.

I do love T2 but I love the gritty 80's bleakness of Terminator, I find John Connor really irritating in T2, really should have been an 18 and a bit more violent and darker like the original and it would have been perfect.

Godfather 2 was brilliant, even better than the first imo.

Shrek? Or was it Shrek 3 that was better?

Aliens was the one that sprang to mind, although it and the original are quite different films, so it's hard to say that one is better than the other, but certainly, Aliens went more 'all action' in a very successful way.

I totally disagree, though, on First Blood II - The Rambo films have a dramatic downward curve from the first one, which actually had some characters you could understand and (in Rambo's case) sympathise with and a plot. The rest were just increasingly stupid mayhem.

Personally, I don't think Stalone made a better film than First Blood until Copland.

I will probably upset a few people, but Trainspotting 2's more positive arc makes it a more enjoyable film for me than the original.

If we are going to go to whole series, then:

Simpsons season 2-7 much better than season 1.

Monty Python series 2 is the best by far.
