are there any actors out there who range so far from Oscar-winning excellence to utter batst crazy? I know the Michael Caine had a reputation of putting his name to anything that would get a paycheck (and why not?) but his acting remained the same (one might say that MC has pretty much played MC for 67 years). Nic Cage on the other hand is (has been ) a good actor but seems to be a playing his acting career in reverse - most actors get better with age, he seems intent on un-learning his 'craft'

Just because he attempts many different parts doesn't mean he's any good at them.

To me, Nic Cage is always Nic Cage.

my apologies - I wasn't making myself totally clear (not for the first, or indeed last, time). When i said range I was referring specifically to the range of films he's appeared in from the good and/or fun Leaving Las Vegas/Con Air/The Rock to being totally.... errrmmmm... 'wow'/out there

To be fair, most people in Hollywood are only there because of a famous relation, it's an industry built on nepotism.

As for range, Robin Williams had some varied roles, and Tom Hanks has a pretty wide mix of serious and comic parts.

I'd say that films are good in spite of him and not because of him. There are good films that some actors make great but Nic Cage isn't one of them.

Taking away blockbusters such as Face Off and Conair, his movies like Lord of War were excellent.

Leave Cage alone!! He isn't even a pretty boy, so has done well to sell tickets.

Dustin Hoffman has a pretty varied career.

Many others, too. Sean Connery has played many varied roles... all with a Scottish accent! Legend!

There doesn't tend to be much middle ground with Nic, his films are either really enjoyable or truly terrible

How about Pierce Brosnan, his movies seem to vary in quality too.

Daniel Day-Lewis.

His early roles: Johnny in My Beautiful Laundrette, and Cecil Vyse in A Room With A View.

You could not believe it was the same actor.

Halle Berry has won both an Oscar (Monsters ball) and a Razzie (Catwoman), I'm guessing a few others have too but I think she was one of the first to actually go to the ceremony and accept her Razzie biggrin

How about Kevin Costner? From Dances with Wolves and JFK to Water World and The Postman

A Spaniard with a Scottish accent while the Scotsman had a French accent...

I know I’ll get flamed but I rather enjoyed The Postman.

Nic Cage is an actor? First I've heard about it.
