Getting Apple TV on the big telly.

We have a Panasonic Smart TV - only two years old - but the Apple TV app is available on the list of apps it marks as available.

I can mirror from my iPad but only get the picture, not the sound?

Is there another way or do I have to get one of the Apple TV boxes?
