Tells the story of the murder of a french lady, Sophie Toscan du Plantier, in West Cork, Southern Ireland a few days before Xmas in 1996.

Fairly decent documentary, made by Jim Sheridan, director of My Left Foot and In The Name of the Father.

They could probably have told the story equally well in 3 or 4 parts though, can be a little slow in places, but interesting nonetheless.

It's also being touted by Netflix. Got an email about it today. I've spent quite a bit of time in the area so look forwards to watching this.

I watched the Entire series.

Very good , but agree it could have been rapped up in 4 episodes.

I gave up 30 mins in, seemed glacial and needed more background narrative I reckon.

I may try again when have more time as I recall the case. Quite odd some of it.

Are you sure this is on Netflix? I had a search and couldn't find it.

The Sky production is separate from the Netflix one. There is a dramatisation of the story in the pipeline too I believe.

Apologies, I thought it was the same show, but it's Netflix's version of the same story. It's coming on the 30th of June and is called Sophie: A murder in West Cork.

No worries, I found it on sky but it’s clear they are dragging it out. Tragic case but very slow story telling.

Watched it and “enjoyed” / very interested in it.

I genuinely had no recollection of it & actually most I’ve made a passing comment about it have zero recollection. That said none life in Ireland and specifically ROI which might have made it more in the media.
But a fascinating situation.

Very very sad

Did he do it?

He was utterly smashed drunk on a few camera shots, utterly vile all the time to his partner (in addition to hospitalising her in a brutal drunken beating) sex addict with shocking depictions etc.

But
no DNA
No eye witness (apart from someone who saw a man with a long coat - but confirmed it wasn’t Ian Bailey)
No motive? No sexual assault no £ no grudge

He might be a vile man (who needs punishing for the assault on his partner) but that doesn’t make him guilty.

I gave up after 30 mins too but after that it picks up pace.

WB, I don't think anyone could realistically challenge your statements (Apart from a French court of course)! Character aside, the apparent lack of evidence and shaky due-diligence throughout the investigation you would think would make for a difficult conviction.

An interesting outcome is his long term partner despite all the pain of living with the clear hatred from people towards him and therefore her. She was batter by him and he was a utter boozer

Why stay with him for all that and then leave him after all that time.

100% agree.

I think there's only three possibilities:

-Sociopath got lost
-Crime of passion
-Professional hit

I don't really see a sociopath getting lost somewhere so remote.

I'm sure they would have been able to investigate whether she had any lovers/enemies.

The last one is interesting....

Btw for anyone struggling in the first 30 mins, it honestly gets better. Stick with it.

After watching it on Netflix I feel fairly confident that he did it, but sadly despite all the circumstantial evidence saying he did, unless there's physical evidence there's no way of proving it.

The guy narrating it made a comment about the murdered woman's husband getting re-married and how the new wife's mother was murdered + how that murder was unsolved too.

As mentioned already that’s a separate show, One that Ian Bailey has tried to block. It shows him in a different light apparently.
Being from Cork am all too familiar with this case, it’s been in the news for years. Bailey seems to be either a genius or a lunatic. Not sure he is guilty, I remember the rumors years and years ago that it was a Garda’s son that had done it (hence the interest in framing Bailey).
Not sure we’ll ever know.
