Gets 4 & 5 star reviews from The Times & The Telegraph. For me it’s a bit meandering and almost an intro to a new series…. I’d rate it three out of five.

I’m a huge Sopranos fan though.

Wondered if anyone else had seen it. Felt like the youtube highlights reel from a full series, very choppy and disjointed and young Tony felt like a bit part player. Think they went too big on making it feel epic and interconnected but you never really connect to any characters. Real shame as I thought that Alessandro Nivola and Michela De Rossi were both excellent even working with a script that leapt from scene to scene with little to link them.

I can't imagine what you'd make of this if you hadn't seen The Sopranos - would have been completely lost!

No spoilers but when I thought a certain character had come back from the dead ... that was almost an unintentional laugh out loud moment.

Just watched it, thought it was wonderful. Fantastic, but sad twist at the end.

It’s a film for Sopranos fans I think, so many little nods to the series, also a lot of ‘what could have beens’.

Liotta was a bit of a spare part in it. Didn’t really see the point of his characters really.

Ok, just finished watching this after finishing the sopranos series for about the sixth time I’d say. I’m a pretty big sopranos/mafia genre fan in general (side note, if you are too, I heartedly recommend Underboss, the sammy the bull book, amazing!) so I’d like to think my comments hold some water. Anyway, a couple of three things!

Could they shoehorn anymore historical soprano references into the film in the time frame of a few years? Yes Tony and junior played catch. Oh, he never had the makings of a varsity athlete? Johnny shot Livia in the beehive? Shocking! Come on! What were the writers thinking? Did they think we’d be “oh that’s clever, they put in the bit about so and so from the series”. And Silvio. Oh my god Silvio. He’s not bald! Steven van zandt is bald, not Silvio! And Ralph In the series referred to Tony, Jackie, Silvio and himself as a little crew growing up, so why is Silvio now at least an associate? And the twin thing with ray Liotta is just weird? They could’ve used him as old man dimeo who we know is a ‘guest of the government’ but no. Maybe, just maybe, if this was a two part feature film or something I could be more accepting, but this? This? No! The only saving grace was the very end with junior ordering the hit on Dickie, which was a bit of a wow moment. But after thinking about that for more than 5 minutes it’s completely ridiculous. Oh and baby Chris crying around Tony because he ‘knows’ he’s going to kill him! Ffs!

There’s no scraps in my scrap book. My opinion, don’t watch, especially if you’re a serious sopranos fan. But if you want to and you enjoy it, good for you, there’s no stigmata these days!

I saw this tonight and was disappointed, just like El Camino.
For me the story doesn't seem to follow the TV series i.e. I believe Silvio and Pussy were around the same age as Tony and grew up/were "made" together; Paulie was older and worked for Johnny Soprano.

Paulie worked for Dickie, but his relationship with Christopher before and after he made a capo was a little fractious in the TV series, he should of been an "Uncle" to Christopher like he is to Meadow and AJ. Tony told Christopher that his father was killed by a cop in the TV series, so don't understand why he would lie at that stage in their relationship. Also, Junior authorising/making a hit on someone higher than him without taking his place doesn't really fit the mafia etiquette/power grab.

Let me tell yo all a couple of three things. Many people think that Sil, Tony, pussy are the same age, but they're wrong.

Silvio said to Tony once "I've known you since YOU were kid." As for the card game, I imagine it's like when Chris robbed the concert with Jackie Jnr. However if Jackie were to tell the story 20 years down the line "me, dino and Chris moltisanti. We thought we were.. ...."

Personally I think the casting was well done, considering you need to find actors who look like the characters around a certain age that can play the part. This must have been quite difficult to cast imo.

Honestly, my biggest issue was the choppy direction and the lack of coherence.

Side note, was chatting about it to a mate in New York and he said he rewatched the box set recently and was surprised to spot his estate agent was a cop with a couple of speaking lines in the episode where Melfi was attacked in the car park.

Agreed.

Part of the 'problem' is that Gandolfini was in his 30s when he first played Tony, but looked older. Sil, Puss and Paulie are all older. In the series I think they mentioned the 'came up' with Johnny Boy, but in the film they're under Dickie,. obviously there's a 20 year gap from the end of the film to the series.

Was thinking about this and is there a more consistent long term display of acting than James Gandolfini over the years. Even if there is the occasional duff episode or script I never thought of him as anything but the character, in the best way it never seemed he was acting.

Were the script writers able to clarify how many years Phil Leontardo did in the can, or what sort of compromises he had to make whilst in there?

Most of what I thought has been mentioned. I thought the actor thst played Dicky carried what was a pretty average script at best.

The back drop of the riots was enough. I didn't give two about a character in Harold that never featured in the series. I'd much preferred to give that time to other characters back stories.

I thought young Livia came across as a bit too nice. Junior was a but cantankerous in the series but was an old man. He came across as someone one the scale and a bit of a weirdo in the series.

I'd like to see a follow up.

Just FYI this has just been added to Netflix if anyone wanted another viewing, or their first. Will give it another go, I thought it was pretty good, and lots of easter eggs for Sopranos fans. Thought the ending was excellent
