Isn't the character an anti-hero?
A plain old villain originally, then a sort of anti-hero, I feel he'll be more hero here. But Rock is quite prolific in showing how he has made his physique even more impressive for this film on Instagram. He actually does look like a character lifted from a comic book. He's the main baddie for Shazam/Captain Marvel which I enjoyed as silly hero fluff.
In an age where we have had #MeToo and many people called out for the poor behaviour, I’m amazed the media hasn’t turned its eye to the A list actors banging in copious amounts of PED’s to prep for a role. These actors are role models for the young and all spout the same scripted lies when asked how they prepped for a role, talking about their chicken/broccoli rice diets and 4 hr per day workouts.
None of them mention they are saucing up more than HP. You don’t put on 20lbs of lean muscle in six months from being a reedy looking, 30 something guy.

It has gone nuts. I recently watched Top Gun 2 with my daughter and then showed her Minority Report. Tom Cruise is more ripped at 60 than he was at 40. More tellingly all the male characters had far more muscle than action stars when I was growing up. Just doesn’t look natural any more. None of them mention they are saucing up more than HP. At last a proper hero type figure playing a hero type in a superhero film, should be good as he is mega powerful and a bit of a bugger, !!
Whoah okay. Hollywood being more inclusive of different lifestyles I guess. I suppose they'll all be safe so long as they have had their monkeypox vaccine! It’s a film aimed at 13-15 year olds. I’m sure 16 year olds would be more discerning. If this had released 15 years ago it may have done well. But there is nothing new here. More CGI, forgettable supporting cast, United in being given awful dialogue.
Terrible CGI fight at the end.
Just awful.
But, it’s not aimed at grown men.
The genius of the early Marvel films was the ability to appeal to cross sections of people. Not just the young, not just Middle Aged comic nerds.
They did this using good actors and getting screenplay/story to a good standard.
You can’t knock Johnson, but the story is beyond poor. Simplistic, meandering with plot threads dangled but ignored. There is no arc. No development.
The Marvel output post Endgame has been the same.

Yep have to agree, watched it the other day and it's a superhero movie by numbers. It's also very much a Rock vehicle which if you've seen any of his older movies, you'll know what to expect. Lots of long brooding shots of Dwayne looking moody and delivering some very corny lines with the subtlety of, well a rock.
Not that I'm knocking him but this seems to almost be a parody of some of his earlier movies, he had mostly moved past that in his more recent movies.
As the poster above said, this might have been OK 15 years ago but ignoring their recent output, Marvel have massively raised the bar for superhero movies so this movie now feels very flat in comparison.
6/10 at a push.

Seems like no love for this on here?
Probably have the right idea to be honest.
As a "brain-out" viewing experience it's perfectly fine. On later reflection it's just the usual "DC Cinematic Universe" mess. The main bits for me:
1) It has that "look". I wanna call it that "DC look" but not in a good way. It makes some shots look like cut-scenes from a computer game. Specifically about the time they got all excited about HDR which just made things a bit glowy, with soft edges. Surely, they must be better than this at CG now?
2) I quite liked Black Adam's back story and the way it was revealed piece by piece. I don't know how true to the the comics it was, but I don't care. The rock is the rock, so either decent or woeful. Thankfully, he was decent. Though I did find it a little jarring to hear kinda 20th century/21st century turns of phrase coming from a character who's supposedly been locked away for 5000 years.
3) The other characters basically got zip. They're just there, filling the scenery and almost entirely 1 dimensional. And there were so many other little threads that could have done with a bit more fleshing out. Like eternium? or the pendant she was wearing.
In the end, we've just seen it all before. Marvel got there first and this just comes across as same-same but different. We've got "hawk man"? who just seemed like a cross between Falcon and maybe a Tony Stark. Only once in his bird suit was basically a bone head with a fighting solves all problems mentality. Brosnan's character (who I can't recall ever hearing the actual name of in the movie) who is like a cut-price Dr Strange. Wind lady, who seemed entirely superfluous and finally the "comic relief", in a character that looked like a blue deadpool, had half of Anf-Man's abilities and wasn't remotely funny.
Also child actor was terrible and had weird voice levels in some scenes. Like the scene where he tries to rally the cities people by doing the hand gesture. It kinda felt like they just recorded him talking, and just upped the volume. Rather than recording him shouting, like you would normally.
