Been enjoying the new C5 adaptation of Dalgliesh with Bertie Carvel. But his car niggles. V12 E type is far too louche for the ascetic poet/philosopher who also happens to be a policeman.

Surely a Jensen or Bristol would be a better call?

Seems like I am the only person watching this;) Doesn't bode well for the ratings!

Could you afford a Bristol on a Policeman's salary?

(Inspector Lynley was, of course, independently wealthy so could do so)

Adam Dalgliesh is also a published poet, so presumably has an additional income from that.

But I agree with the OP, the E-type didn't quite seem to fit with his character, although Wikipedia confirms that he drove 'a Jaguar' in the later novels (and a Cooper Bristol and Jensen Healey in the earlier novels apparently).

I've enjoyed the series so far.

No he couldn't really afford a Bristol, but it is the telly!

Interesting that he drove a Jensen Healey in some of the books. That seems more like it.

I guess the TV people couldn't find one of those, not one that would stand up for the rigours of filming anyway;)

Indeed. We are probably reading too much into it. The producers probably just wanted a car that 90% of viewers would recognise.

I believe they are moving the timeframe of the stories along rather than sticking in a certain era for the duration so his choice of wheels might change from episode to episode.

Yes, since Morse old Jags are go to cars for TV detectives I guess.

Bertie C is better than Roy Marsden IMO. And as for Martin Shaw, the less said the better.

Ha. At least they used a Jag instead of some clapped out Ford Granada in the 1980s TV series.

The series is turning into a concours classic car show, spotted thus far, the E Type, Mini Cooper mini hornet, police triumph herald, merc saloon, triumph 2000, triumph Toledo? 2 MGBs, Capri.

Not complaining but in heart beat the cars appear to be used well worn examples.

Just finished E6, what a cracking series.

The rear window of the E-type looks weird btw.

Yes this is a thing on most period tv shows now. They put a lot of effort into getting correct era vehicles but then spoil the effect because the cars are all so pristine. Surely they could fake up a bit of dirt at least, if not full blown rust;)

Latest episode last night.

The police woman's Escort Mexico looked the 'wrong' colour also when one of the victims was found the Mini they had been driving looked like a far later model than it should have been.

He is driving a 'J' registration (Aug 1970 on) but the police cars are Morris Minors. Also read that recent episode was set in 1979. I am old enough to remember that MMs were not being used by the police as late as that. They don't usually get that sort of detail so wrong ...........or am I wrong?

No, you're not wrong, I'd thought the same and also bored my OH by pointing out the Mini not being correct for the registration year!

To be fair, the Mini Clubman estate in Rivals was permanently filthy.

It wasn't the only filthy thing, either. And I'm not talking wellies.

I've really enjoyed the last couple of series, I often forget the episodes are Thu AND Friday and have to stream on My5. smile

I noticed that the Escort Mexico had a black and silver rear plate. That is now legal (obviously a borrowed car) due to the oversight by DVLA when the rolling forward of MoT exemption and their use was re-instigated in 2014. [pedant mode] But they would have been illegal in period, reflective being compulsory on cars registered after 1/1/73 [/pedant mode].

it took several years for DVLA to do anything but they announced a couple of years go that this would stop; it is permitted for cars up until 1980.
