Anyone watch the Drivetribe YouTube Channel?

I followed their Mondeo ST200 rebuild with interest. I did notice the blue smoke on the test drive as some others did but on the face of it it looked like they'd done a proper job.

Their latest episode would make it seem not. By not defending MAD Ford they seem to be laying the blame squarely at their feet.

The paint looks shocking, there's even some of it in the oil pickup, god knows how that's happened, maybe sprayed it with the sump off?

Headlining hanging down, it's a terrible advert for MAD Ford even if they were pressured by deadlines.

It didn't even look that good for the Smallest Cog because they were advocating buying another ebay engine rather than properly rebuilding the engine they have.

The blue paint in the oil pickup wasn’t the car colour it was paint from the bolts you could see all the bolts had blue lines on when they took the sump off

Agree both parties do not look good at all. I said in the other thread that on the “completion” video it looked like stuff you would normally replace if going to that effort hasn’t been done.

Yeah it's very odd, very disappointing too. There needs to be an explanation. MAD always came across pretty well I thought in the past videos but who knows what goes on behind the scenes with pressure on timings etc.

I'm considering unsubscribing from drivetribe, the videos on the whole are okay but not great, frequency of uploads isn't that great and the video lengths are all over the place.

We'll see. I do hope that they clarify the Mondeo situation and what exactly happened. I was interested in the Mazda MX-5 with the V10 but as that was being done by MAD I wonder if that has fallen foul of whatever has gone on with the Mondeo?

I was shocked by this video. The gap from the restoration videos where the work on the car was portrayed as near perfect, to this needs where it's being portrayed as bodged and hurried is ludicrous, especially given there is absolutely no explanation for it. It also doesn't sit well with me that they are openly criticising and impugning the work of MAD Ford Engineering without apparently giving them any opportunity to explain, or any right of reply.

That said, I am really struggling to understand how any self respecting bodyshop would let work like that out of the door, even if it was done at mate's rates for someone they knew.

Exactly.

In addition the video walk around of the car in the lighting studio would have highlighted any paint problems which were clearly not present otherwise they would have been presented (or rather not)

I suspect a typical production job "rush it for half the price" job.

I think this is all a bit convenient for The Smallest Cog ....................

I had a Google and search online and couldn't find any particularly bad reviews from MAD Ford so not quite sure what's gone on.....

I've known the owner of MAD Ford for many years and seen some lovely work come our of the garage. Also been lucky to be there during builds and filming.
Just to put the record straight(believe me or not, this is what I saw)... the owner always insists on doing things right, no corners cut and is the first to wholeheartedly berate anyone who doesn't. I witness this rebuild first hand from start to finish...the tight time restraints were in no way tight(that's tv hype), there was plenty of time to do the job right...plenty, I questioned some things that I assumed would be replaced but they just got a lick of paint. As for the storage...Sat outside in 6" of mud next to an open, overflowing sewer for weeks, tarted up when drivetribewere due. I can only offer my opinion of what I witnessed and its yours to agree or disagree. All I'm trying to say is there is much much more put in to snap-on tools and shiny things than is put into the actual builds/buissiness.
Such a shame as there is so much potential there but the hunt for fame and admiration greatly outweighs the actual bread and butter of the garage.

I assume you work/worked there? What's happened to the owner that's made him go from good to poo, in your opinion?

Never worked for him. Far to shouty for me.
From what I've witnessed he is always broke. As I said he spends a fortune on expensive tools and shiny toolboxes. Rather than back in to the business. Enough kit in there to feed about 6 mechanics...he has one and an apprentice. I've seen him slag off so many good people it's embarrassing (and no, I'm not one...although who knows)

So it appears from your post that actually Drive tribe were right to be unhappy with the job!

Even from what little can be seen in the video, the paintwork is beyond shocking. The garage should never have sent it out like that, and if they thought they were under too much pressure due to the imposed deadlines, they should have just said no and refused.

That aside, I am always highly suspicious of garages which have a spray booth and body prep area within a mechanics workshop. The amount of dust produced by bodywork is incredible, even with extraction systems, and that is absolutely not the environment to be building engines and gearboxes in.

Equally, bodywork and paint is incredibly sensitive to temperature and contaminants. A single squirt of silicone spray or other mechanics products anywhere near a spray booth, even within the same building, can ruin a paint job. Oily hands touching surfaces then those surfaces being touched by painters is a recipe for disaster.

Bodyshop and mechanics works should always be separate, and never in the same building, in my option.

It scares the bejesus out of me when I see a spray booth in a mechanics workshop.
