I've always liked this picture of the Star Trek TV cast attending the 1976 roll out of the first Shuttle Orbiter, Enterprise (named after the Starship Enterprise, following intense lobbying by Star Trek fans).

Of the cast members who attended, only Walter Koenig (Chekov) is still alive now.

William Shatner declined his invitation to attend.

89 is a great innings though. A shame, she was an incredible person at the time and did wonders for racial equality (at least as I understand it, I was not around at the time!)

The original Star Trek always reminds me of my Dad, he loved Star Trek and it's sad to see another cast member passing as it takes me back to my childhood.

Nichelle was such a role model, way ahead of her time, no pun intended.

The Enterprise rollout picture indicates how the 70s was the decade that style forgot. Apart from Nichelle of course - she always looked great.

Was that the most diverse cast of it's time? There is every flavour of human there - black, white, Japanese, Russian, even Scottish(ish). A great thing.

It was deliberately envisaged that way by Roddenberry. He wanted a diverse crew in order to show that it was humanity that was exploring space, not America.
