Marvel's Secret Invasion
Discussion
1st episode now on Disney+
Tired of waiting for a new home to be found, a rebel faction of the shape shifting Skulls have decided to infiltrate Earth causing terrorist acts between countries in the hope of starting a new world war so they can settle here once humans have wiped themselves out.
It's up to a 'too old for this s
t' Nick Fury to stop them.
Seems like a more serious Marvel series about espionage rather than the usual superhero fare.
SLJ, Ben Mandelson, Emilia Clarke and Olivia Coleman put in good performances and Halifax fills in for parts of Russia.
It may seem a bit slow but finishes with a surprising ending.
5.5/10 so far.

That first episode was dreary. Why is it so slow? Doesn’t have to be break neck action but the plot needs to move along. The comic saw several heroes who had been swapped out for years.
Good way to bring back Scarlet Johansson, we’re they minded to. I’m seriously jaded with everything Disney Marvel are putting out now. I think a lot of people feel the same. Feels like they’ve stopped caring.

I'm glad to see some similar views to my own here as reading stuff online I thought maybe I was the odd one out with some of the praise the first episode is being given.
Opening credits - Yes they're AI-generated but that fits with the theme of the show and was a deliberate choice I feel, where things aren't what they seem and are always a little "off". I think people are looking for something that isn't there with the hate they're getting (although I agree, they're not brilliant credits bit who really cares.) Peacemaker they are not.
The rest of the show I thought was incredibly boring and poorly written. Ham-fisted exposition with Talos literally explaining plot points out of nowhere to tee up the introduction of new characters for example, obvious bait and switches with the Skrulls posing as various key characters, Nick Fury now seems to be written like Danny Glover from Lethal Weapon with him not having the slightest clue what's going on.
I know they shot with Covid restrictions but this is the worst example of another city doubling for Russia I've ever seen (I know it's mostly London, was there some Edinburgh in there as well?).
Overall I thought it was a weak first episode, if they don't walk back that final scene as well I think that's a massive mistake for that character to be wasted like that (I'm sure it will be but still).

Looked mostly West Yorkshire and they were blowing up Halifax at the end.Opening credits - Yes they're AI-generated but that fits with the theme of the show and was a deliberate choice I feel, where things aren't what they seem and are always a little "off". A bit slow, but watchable.
Christ that was slow.
In pace it reminded me of the Falcon and Winter Soldier series (which we finished) and the Hawkeye one (which we abandoned after two episodes).
I'll stick with it but i hope it won't just be rouge skrulls blowing stuff up each week with a "surprise" reveal at the end that one of the characters has been a skrull all along.

When I watched the Captain Marvel film for the first time, I found it almost impossible to accept they were not the bad guys.
I kept thinking “But they are Skrulls!” Like Captain Kirk’s reaction to Kilngons in the later Star Trek films.
I only knew them from the comics decades before when they were irredeemable villains.
I’m glad Secret Invasion has confirmed my prejudice. Skrulls were offered help by Fury and Captain Marvel, but when they didn’t get what they want, they decide to kill all humans and take the planet.
Talos and his faction were obviously an aberration.

It's an MCU story about some bad guys who want to take over the world.
Nope, not had one of those storylines in a while...
I suppose the biggest problem I have with the premise to this series is that I don't really care. We know that Kang is coming so a bunch of skrulls skulking around in alleyways and blowing things up seems insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

It feels really laboured, and the low(er) budget really shows up in bigger scenes much as it did with some of the Star Wars series aside from Andor. The whole Moscow (let's take a town and put 4 Russian signs up = Moscow!) bombing sequence was pretty painful.
As others have said it's also not really leading anywhere, now we know the trajectory of the latest MCU phase. It was a major comic arc so it feels odd to throw it away in a low key TV thriller.
Olivia Colman is the standout but she hasn't had nearly enough screen time.
