It just seems to me that every other science fiction film these days is set in a post apocalyptic or dystopian society.

Wonder if i am missing any gems from the last few years, what are your pics?

Aniara - it is dystopian, but not in the ways you think, well worth a watch.

Leaving it to those from Dystopia to study the VAR, but:

Logan's Run ?
Close Encounters ?
ET ?
The Thing ?

Classic films that I have seen. I was just wondering if there was anything decent recently that wasn't depressing.

I love interstellar. Ok it has the whole Earth is dying thing but the rest of the film is all about exploring space in spaceships.

I have never seen an actually good science fiction film… books are where it’s at with Sci Fi.
Even if a good book is adapted it’s turned into a big standard action/explosions bore, just set in the future.

Although having said all that, I’ve just remembered a very very good one.

Arrival.

Ted chiang’s books are top quality.

I can see where you are coming from having read shed loads of Robert A. Heinlein, Isaac Asimov and Iain M. Banks.

But also really like seeig thing on the big screen like:
Moon
Silent Running
The Martian
Contact
Tron Legacy
Gravity
Ex-Machina

I really like the space stuff

Yes great book, decent film. Although does (spoiler!) fail on the whole post-apocalyptic front.

I’d like to see (good) TV/film adaptions of some Iain M Banks/Culture books and also Revelation Space series by Alaistair Reynolds. In fact I think that latter series would adapt better, thinking about it.
