Sneaky SKY TV rip off merchants

My Mrs wanted sky last year, I personally didn't because I stream stuff or play games. Told her it was cr@p and probably still had old programmes.
She was adamant she wanted it for her and my daughter, so I gave in and said do what you want. She called them up and we was offered free documentaries, free kids tv, free this free that for £52 per month first 6 months. We was promised the Internet speed would be the same as what we had, which was BT at the time. We didn't get any of the channels promised, they was extra cost, and the Internet is absolutely shocking. I'm lagging on games and the speed in general is no where near what we had.
We had the install on Halloween last year, Mrs didn't bother using it since :slaps head: my daughter wasn't interested in it either she carried on using disney + and Netflix. Now I'm paying half for something I ain't bloody using and didn't want!!
More to the point though, we've not paid £52 promised over 6 months. It started in November around £56, December and this month is £65 and now we're told from February it's £85!?!
I told my Mrs to get on the phone to them and ask why were being charged so much and to cancel it. SKY just threw a load of nonsense saying the price is going up because of our Internets 3 months free is up, when that wasn't what we was initially sold to us.
We can't cancel because we're past our 14 days and apparently we're in an annual contract. So the only way out is we have to pay the remaining year of £482. Where that figure came from is completely random to me.
I'm just worried the bloody things going to keep rising in price, we've already had our gas and electricity gone from £800pa to £1800pa. Council tax is more than likely going to slap us harder in April too. Things you do for women aye?

You didn't do anything. When we renew things, even if it's not for me, my wife and I discuss it and both read the details so thay we aren't getting into something that wasn't agreed. You're paying half of the bill, imo it was a joint responsibility to check the details.

I would prefer going back to BT I was happy with the Internet speed and price £35 was nothing. I'm only paying half towards SKY because it's joint responsibility even though I didn't want it. My Mrs should of looked in depth with it all before commiting.TheAngryDog said:

I agree, and regret not taking a look at the small print myself. All my Mrs said was it's £52 per month, I was happy to pay half even though I'm not bothered with it and it's bitten us in the Harris. I hope you manage to sort it.
I might just chuck the £482 in just to clear it off. If it's a 12 or 18 month contract, paying £85pm continously as an example, it's going to be double if not triple the cancellation fee.

It would seem that you have a verbal contract with your wife to pay £26 a month (being half the £52 she informed you that it would be).
I’d pay that to her and nothing more - let her sue you for the balance.

Here is what I would do.
Watch some of the TV, at least something you like to get some value off it.
Then exactly 30 days (or whatever) from the end of the contract cancel it.
Port over to BT in that 30 days and call it a day.
Dont nag the mrs about it, she probably just made a mistake and its one of those things.
Yes its £££ but you would be paying £35 (plus the increase coming) on BT so just suck it up and make the best of it, your mrs will be much happier than constantly being reminded about it.

Are you sure? For Sky TV, the Ts & Cs give them the right to increase prices, but there's no right to cancel for this reason if you're in the 18 month minimum term.Maybe you're thinking of broadband and phone contracts?

Not true. The TV contract allows Sky to increase the price by up to 10% during the initial term. Once out of contract, then you can cancel if you don't like the increase.Maybe wait till April?

Netflix and Amazon Prime incl Paramount is all we now have, no telly licence, more than enough there.
