What is this TV series...

I've had a look and don't immediately see a thread for this sort of thing, so I'll ask the question here.
My brain, acting in its usual disjointed manner has reminded me of a show that I didn't watch when I was younger. It would have been in the 80's, probably mid 80's on. The show itself could have been older than that, though it was at least in colour. It could even have been a movie - but I think it was a series.
The only bit I remember (because I didn't really watch it all) was a character trying to escape a fortress by climbing into the breech of a large cannon (i.e. 16"+) and crawling out to the muzzle. I recall him being apprehended before he could escape.
I keep thinking of the prisoner of Zenda - and it could be that, but I've no desire to watch it all to check for a single scene. A European feel to it, hence prisoner of Zenda.
Any thoughts, or did I make this up myself?
