Just seen the Exorcist (1973) on iPlayer for the first time today, after work.

I thought there was supposed to be a spider crawl down the stairs.........it was not shown. Baffling. And disappointed.

That scene is not included in the released version of the film. However it’s gained such massive notoriety over the past 50 years that lots of people assume it is.

First time I saw is was in Mark Kermode’s superb documentary about it.

When we were 14 years old or so, a bunch of us would go and see all the 'X' films at the Ace Cinema in Green Street, East Ham.
Films like Scanners, The Exterminator, Breaking Glass and all manner of dodgy early '80s horrors. hehe

Then one week there was a double-bill of Friday the 13th and The Exorcist.

We all sat there laughing and eating popcorn when we were watching Friday the 13th, then The Exorcist came on.

It was like two films joined together, the first half was quite dull and mundane, then it just turned into something totally horrific which had all five of us absolutely terrified. Can't remember anything about the film, but can still remember us running for the bus to get home, petrified.

Watched it on DVD in the early 2000s and am convinced it was barely the film we saw in 1981, cuts and editing must have changed it so much.

It was mentioned on my local Facabook page this week that TCM were showing 'a version you've never seen' on Thursday evening, but unfortunately that's not a channel I still get.
It was one of the last films shown before it shut down a couple of days ago apparently.
