Freesat pvr or Sky plus?
Discussion
We dumped Sky a while back but the boss misses the ease of recording a series on Sky plus, yes you can get everything on catchup but you can’t skip through the adverts.
So assuming Sky still do the £10 a month viewing card would you go this way or is there any advantage if I stump up £250 for a 1tb freesat box?

'Freesat From Sky" is no longer available unfortunately.I just ditched Virgin Media and bought a second-hand Freeview Play Humax box for exactly the same reasons as you. So far so good.

It's not available to new customers, as regular Freesat exists so what would be the point? They can however still offer Freesat from Sky if you're an existing customer and wanting to ditch them. I was offered this option earlier this year when I was cancelling, with a £5 per month option to keep the Sky + facility.
I declined.
Can you not record a series on Freesat? I use a https://www.world-of-satellite.co.uk/gigablue/giga... with 4 dvb s2 tuners, it is set to use the SKY epg and I can set auto recording, therefore it then records the series. It covers all the free to air channels on sky not just the ones on the freesat epg.
The BT TV PVR works well. It's made by Humax, but seems to be more user-friendly than Humax's own boxes, as well as being cheaper when I last looked.
Should be able to find one secondhand on eBay.
Although it's a BT-branded product, you only need to subscribe to get the Internet channels. AFAIK, it works as a Freeview PVR with no charges. I do subscribe to BT TV, but only for the main box. I've got a few others that are just used as Freeview recorders.
If you really need Freesat, then a Humax Freesat box will be fine. Unless you've got a rubbish TV signal in your area, Freesat is mostly pointless these days I think.
Or, subscribe to BT TV's cheapest package, and get the box for nothing?

Freesat is just an EPG, nothing more than that. It covers some of sky's free to air channels and provides the ability to find programs in a TV guide. If the Freesat box has a hard drive it will allow the recordings of the programs in the EPG. If you have the correct box (enima2 based Linux box) you can use the SKY EPG which will allow more Free to air channels in the EPG. Freesat has 170 channels, sky has 220 FTA channels. Mind you most of those channels are not worth the bother. A Linux box will be a bit more difficult to set up, but will have a lot more functionality once set up
See https://www.world-of-satellite.co.uk/ The boxes are comparable in price to the mainstream boxes.
