Just spotted that Duncan Jones (Moon, etc.) is currently directing a Rogue Trooper film.

I used to love the comic as a kid, and the material is suitably nuts, so it could be brilliant as an animated film... Especially given the director.

Good news!

Read the comics, back when I was a kid. Played the PC game when it came out.

Hope they have a 'monkey on my back' scene.

Yeah the game was surprisingly fun. The interaction between his dead buddies in his gun, helmet, and was it backpack, were very funny.

Being developed in Unreal Engine 5 too, which is interesting, given it's a game engine.

Rogue is alive and well in current 2000ad. Stories are a bit more gritty and 'modern' but he's still doing his thing.

I'm not too sure about this animated movie. Doug Jones has one good movie to his name (moon) which I'd argue was lightening in a bottle. Prepared to reserve judgement though and will watch it.

I'd have said animation would be more suitable to something like DR and Quinch or Ace Trucking Co. And where's the Halo Jones film! If any story deserved a film it's halo Jones.

Care to recommend any recent story lines please?

Haven't read it in years, might have to buy one as a graphic novel.

On the topic of the film's format, UE5 can be almost photo realistic, and I suspect doing it justice as live action would be a 2-300m dollar budget movie, which would also mean story by committee, endless studio interference, and a loss of its soul. Stallone's judge dredd being a case in point.

ETA... I had a quick look to see what graphic novels there are. Garth Ennis has written a new strip out in July so I've ore-ordered a copy.

A lot of 2000ad these days seem to be dredd related so there are some good stories about Hershey (quite a sad story really) and Anderson. I've only really got back into 2000ad in the last year because Sainsbury's carry it and they put them near Empire magazine.

There's a lot of nostalgia in them with at least a page a week about the history of the magazine. Also, some greats like Ian Gibson recently passed so there are frequent retrospectives. They also do short strips with classic characters such as Johnny Alpha and Sam Slade. I'll have a dig through to give you some titles of recent good strips.

As for the film, I've heard it's being done on an 'indie' budget so I'd guess sub $10m. Some of the voice actors seem questionable too like Matt Berry. I hope they don't have comedians as helm, gunner and bagman. We shall see I guess.

Love interest of Venus bluegenes?.

Rogue was my fave 2000ad character, bad company / ABC Warriors coming second. It’s been a good 40 years since I picked up an issue, I still have loads of back progs somewhere as well.
The last Rogue story I recall was when he found a pistol with a bio chip in it “belonging” to a sadistic Major, I think.

Yeah Matt Berry is an odd choice. I love toast of London, but I'm not sure about him playing the usual Matt Berry character in this. Hope he tones it down a little.

I absolutely love the Halo Jones story, but a Halo Jones film in the current Hollywood climate would make me very nervous.

Even though the Halo Jones story is very female-centric, I fear that the journey the main protagonist goes on, from the hapless hoop dweller, to the street-wise and world weary escapee would not sit well with tinsel town.

Hollywood has a way, at the moment, of making all female leads insufferable Mary-Sue's, fully skilled in whatever they turn their hands too.

And if that were the case with a Halo Jones movie, the entire essence of the story would be lost.

I was elated when I heard they were making a film of Rogue Trooper but much less so when I learned it was going to be an animated version. I think if they wanted an animated 2000AD story they should have gone with Nemesis or maybe Zenith.

Halo Jones was fantastic and it is just a pity that Moore never got round to finishing it...

From the 2000AD archives, I'd most like to see an adaptation of Button Man made into a film.

Remember Matt Berry was in Moon, so perhaps one of Jones' mates rather than being chosen purely on merit. I'm sure he will be fine.

I've seen Moon and have zero recollection of him being in it. I'll have to re-watch it now. I guess didn't go full Toast / Reynholm.

This could be so great. As many have already mentioned I read the comics back in the day and picked up a couple of the Rogue Trooper books as well.

Hopefully there won't be a love interest per se and hopefully the storyline won't be compressed into a Hollywood blitz through the whole timeline, whilst conveniently skipping over decent stories which they deem unworthy. Of course some storylines were a bit repetitive from what I remember and re-reading them as books as opposed to weekly progs. Of course it's fairly well dosed with propaganda.. So might have a bit of readjustment.

They (Hollywood) seem to have gone nuts since Iron Man came out and then just gone Marvel manic all over most films which either have a single or a handful of scenes they wish to portray and then identikit fit a start, middles and end around those particular scenes. Animated could be good, but it deserves so much more than that and hopefully they've looked at the fan film that's out there, Quartz Zone, it's almost 6 years old now.

Hopefully they get it and the execs don't muck around with it too much, but times do change - a lot of the storylines are from 40 years ago, although some of the underlying narratives are coming back round..

Wasn't aware of the fan film.

Or the Strontium Dog one.

They look great.

Thanks for mentioning it.

Having quickly checked I can see Doug Jones stars in WWDItS but I can't see a mention of Duncan Jones.
